No. 3 Terps Fall To No. 5 Buckeyes In B1G Tournament Title Game, 14-10

ANN ARBOR, MI – No. 2-seeded and No. 3-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse was defeated by No. 1 seed and No. 5-ranked Ohio State, 14-10, in the Big Ten Tournament championship game at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday. This was Maryland's seventh Big Ten Tournament title game appearance since joining the conference in 2015. The Terps are 11-3 overall heading into the NCAA Tournament. 

The 2025 DI men's lacrosse championship selection show takes place on May 4 at 9:30 p.m., live on ESPNU. It will reveal the field of 18 teams. The single-elimination tournament will conclude with final rounds at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on May 24-26.

Ohio State (13-3) opened the game on a 7-1 run, including a run of five straight goals through the 8:45 first-quarter mark. Maryland rallied to bring the game within three goals (8-5) after back-to-back scores by Eric Spanos midway through the second frame. It then faced another six-goal deficit in the second half before cutting it to four. However, the Buckeys closed out the game, maintaining a multi-goal advantage. 

Maryland was led offensively by Spanos (2 goals & 1 assist), Elijah Stobaugh (2 goals & 1 assist), Braden Erksa (2 goals) and Bryce Ford (2 goals). Daniel Kelly and Zach Whittier and also recorded scoring tallies. 
  McNaney finished the game with 10 saves between the pipes. It was his 12th time this season making double-digit saves, as he recorded eight in the first half alone. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Will Schaller (two), Jackson Canfield, George Stamos and Spanos caused turnovers.   

Jonah Carrier (9 wins) and Shea Keethler (6 wins) led the Terps from the faceoff dot. They combined to win 15 of 28 faceoffs. Carrier led Maryland with a career-high nine ground balls. 

The Terps outshot the Buckeyes 44-31, but Ohio State goalie Caleb Fyock — the Big Ten Specialist of the Year — made a career-high tying 19 saves. He made several of his saves on the doorstep, proving to be a significant catalyst in the Buckeyes' win. Fyock was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. 

McNaney, Spanos and Kelly were named to the All-Tournament Team.  

Breaking Down The Action
  • Ohio State opened the game with five unanswered goals through the 8:45 mark. Daniel Kelly got Maryland on the board with a score assisted by Elijah Stobaugh at the 7:25 mark. The Buckeyes followed with one final tally, and the Terps trailed 6-1 entering the second frame. 
  • Maryland tightened up on both ends, outscoring Ohio State 4-3 in the second to trail 9-5 at halftime. Eric Spanos scored back-to-back goals at the 7:44 and 6:50 marks, briefly making it a three-score game. Braden Erksa and Stobaugh also netted back-to-back goals. Logan McNaney had eight first-half saves. 
  • The Terps trailed 13-8 entering the fourth quarter. They faced another six-goal deficit but cut it to four with back-to-back goals by Zach Whittier and Stobaugh. Erksa also tallied a second goal in the frame. 
  • Bryce Ford scored twice in the fourth to make it a four-score game. The Terps limited the Buckeyes to just one scoring tally in the fourth, but were unable to string together enough scores to tie the game. 
Multi-Terps Update
  • Eric Spanos (2 goals & 1 assist) had the 29th multi-point game of his career. It was his 21st multi-goal game.
  • Elijah Stobaugh (2 goals and 1 assist) recorded his third career multi-point game. It was his third multi-goal game.
  • Bryce Ford (2 goals) recorded his ninth multi-point game as a Terp after transferring from Fairfield. It was his 50th overall, including his 38th multi-goal performance. 
  • Braden Erksa (2 goals) had his 38th multi-point game in his three years as a Terp. It was his 23rd multi-goal game. 
B1G Tourney Time 
  • This was Maryland's seventh Big Ten Tournament championship appearance. It has missed the title game just three times, excluding the 2020 tournament, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
  • Despite the loss, since joining the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps are a conference-best 12-6 all-time in Big Ten Tournament games. 
McNaney On The Charts
  • Logan McNaney is Maryland's program's career record holder for saves. With 10 in the game, he now has 743 for his career. He surpassed Kevin O'Leary's 705 from 1981-84, a record that stood for over 40 years, in his outing at Ohio State on April 12.   
  • He's also the program's all-time wins leader with 58. 
  • McNaney is back for his sixth season. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player wears the program's historic No. 1 jersey this season. He's the first goalie to wear the number since Melvin Stephens (1989-91). 
  • The goalie, recently named First Team All-Big Ten, is a member of the Top 25 Tewaaraton Watch List and has a chance to become the first-ever goalie on the men's side to win the prestigious award.
