Eddie Benion, Steve Gephardt Added To Men’s Basketball Staff

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland men's basketball head coach Buzz Williams announced today the addition of Eddie Benion and Steve Gephardt to the Terps' staff. Benion has joined the University's Sports Medicine Staff as the Program Director for Basketball Sports Medicine and will serve as the Head Men's Basketball Athletic Trainer, while Gephardt joins as the Director of Strength and Resilience.

This will begin the eighth year for Benion to serve alongside Williams. He served at Texas A&M as the men's basketball program's athletic trainer and worked alongside Williams at Virginia Tech for a season as the assistant athletics director for sports medicine. Additionally, Benion worked at VCU for eight years as the assistant athletics director for sports medicine, Cleveland State for six years as the head athletic trainer, and six years at Alabama A&M as the head athletic trainer as well.

Benion plays an integral role managing the daily healthcare of the men's basketball team and the operation of the training room. He handles the team's daily injury and illness management, medical evaluations and treatments, rehabilitation protocols, corrective exercises, recovery strategies and post-operative care.

"Everyone in our program loves Eddie B. Coaches, players, everyone. Not just because of the value he brings to their bodies and availability on the court, but because of the human being he is," said Williams. "He genuinely cares about every part of this organization and the success we're working toward. He is among the elite in his very competitive field and it is an honor that he chose to follow us from Texas A&M here to Maryland."

Gephardt has worked alongside Williams for the past five seasons at Texas A&M after serving as the associate head strength and conditioning coach for 13 years at TCU. Known for his innovative player development strategies, Gephardt is responsible for the day-to-day fitness and performance of the program. He develops in-season and off-season programs designed to enhance speed development, power production, mobility, flexibility and injury prevention.

Gephardt first joined Williams at Texas A&M prior to the 2020-21 season after spending 13 years at TCU where he was the associate head strength and conditioning coach. He had direct oversight of the strength and conditioning programs for the men's basketball and men's golf programs and assisted with development of the football program.

"We believe deeply in the benefits of our players having time spent in the weight room, and Coach Gep has done an incredible job since he's joined our staff in giving our student-athletes the best chance to succeed when it comes to their bodies," said Williams. "His credentials speak for themselves, but it's his ability to earn the player's respect and demand accountability that truly sets him apart. You won't find a more selfless servant in college basketball than Coach Gephardt. He's just as intentional about developing our players as he is about helping our coaches and their families — often sacrificing his own time to serve others. I'm extremely grateful he's with us."

Maryland is coming off a 27-9 campaign in 2024-25 which saw the Terps reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2016.
