COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland returns to Ludwig Field Thursday night at 7 p.m. to close out its three-game home stand with a matchup against UMBC. The Terps are riding a two-game home winning streak and will look to finish the homestand on a high note. September features five of Maryland's first six matches on their home pitch.
Terps Open Season With BACK To Back WINS
- Ava Morales scored twice and Faith Luckey recorded her first career shutout as Maryland rolled to a 3-0 win over Lehigh in the season opener on Thursday night at Ludwig Field. The victory marked the largest margin of victory in a season opener since 2021.
- Morales' two goals tied her career high and marked her sixth and seventh career goals, while Kelsey Smith opened the scoring with her third career goal. All three goals came in the first half.
- Luckey made three saves on five shots in her first career action as a Terp against Lehigh.
- On Sunday, Kelsey Smith netted her second and third goals of the season, Lisa McIntyre recorded her second career multi-goal game, and Luckey posted her second consecutive shutout as Maryland dominated Saint Francis, 5-0, at Ludwig Field.
- The five-goal output marked Maryland's most goals in a game since Oct. 6, 2019, when the Terps defeated Illinois 6-2. That game was also the last time two Maryland players scored multiple goals in a single contest (Adalee Broadbent and Alyssa Poarch).
- Kelsey Smith tallied seven points over the opening weekend, just one shy of Maryland's entire 2024 team-leading total of eight, and led the league in scoring for the weekend.
Lisa McIntyre recorded her second-career multi-goal match against Saint Francis.
the matchup
- The last time the Terps faced the Retrievers was September 4, 2006, with Maryland winning 6-0.
- Maryland is 7-0 at home all-time against UMBC, dating back to their first matchup on October 5, 1998 (Terps won 1-0).
- Maryland's all-time record against UMBC is 10-1.
New Leadership
- The Terrapins are 2-0 under head coach Michael Marchiano in 2025, marking the first time since they've started a season with back-to-back wins — and shutouts — since 2021. Maryland's eight total goals through its first two matches are its most in over a decade (13 in 2013).
- Marchiano was appointed as the program's head coach in December 2024 after serving as interim head coach during the latter part of the 2024 season. A Maryland soccer alumnus and two-time national champion, he is determined to guide Terrapin soccer back to championship form.
- In the 2023–24 season, Marchiano served as Maryland's women's assistant coach, helping the Terrapins compile a 34-9-3 record and make consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal appearances.
