Guillermo Del Pino Wins FIBA U18 Eurobasket Championship

Incoming freshman guard scores game-high 23 points in championship game against France.

BELGRADE, SERBIA - Incoming Maryland freshman guard Guillermo Del Pino came off a high screen to bury a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining to give Spain an 82-81 win over France in the FIBA U18 Eurobasket Championship on Sunday at Belgrade Arena.

Del Pino notched a game-high 23 points including nine of Spain's final points as they overcame a 15-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.
 

For the tournament, he averaged 11.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He scored 12 points in the quarterfinal win over Turkey and 14 in the semifinal victory over Italy.

His game-winner gave Spain its sixth consecutive FIBA U18 Eurobasket championship title.

The native of Cordoba, Spain, signed with the Terps earlier this spring. He earned all-star honors at the NBA's Basketball Without Borders camp in February 2024

In 2023, Del Pino was the MVP of the FIBA Under-16 European Championship where he averaged 14.6 points in leading Spain to the Gold medal. He scored 26 points in the quarterfinals against Slovenia and 22 points in the final against Italy. For the tournament, he shot 45.5 percent from three-point range and became the third consecutive Spanish player to win MVP.

He also averaged 11 points through seven games at the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Turkey where he was also named to the all-star team.

This past season, he was a key member at just 17 years old of the Cordoba Club de Balconcesto of the Spanish Segunda League where he averaged 10.3 points in 17 games during the 2024-25 campaign.

According to NBADraft.net, was ranked as a top-10 international prospect in July 2024. Del Pino will be one of 15 new Terps to play for new head coach Buzz Williams this season. Williams has led his programs to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and 13 20-win seasons in 18 years as a head coach.
 
Maryland is coming off a 27-9 campaign in 2024-25 which saw the Terps reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2016.

The first chance fans will have to see the 107th edition of the Maryland men's basketball team will be on Monday, Oct. 27 in an exhibition game against UMBC. The season opener will be on Monday, Nov. 3 against Coppin State in the Hall of Fame Series Baltimore doubleheader at CFG Bank Arena. That night will also feature a game against Loyola and Towson as well as a special recognition of Maryland head coaching great Gary Williams by the Naismith Hall of Fame.
