Maryland Wins Second Straight Conference Game 2-1 Over Purdue

Mckinley Heaven scored the game-winning goal for the second time in four days as the Terps found their sixth win of the season.

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Terps (6-4, 2-1 Big Ten) finished off an undefeated week at Ludwig Field on Sunday with a 2-1 win over the Purdue Boilermakers (4-5-2, 1-2 Big Ten). With its sixth win of the season, Maryland reached the program's highest win mark since the 2017 season. 

Mckinley Heaven played hero for the second time in as many matches, scoring the game-winning goal midway through the second half. 

Maryland was awarded a free kick in the 30th minute and Ava Morales blasted a shot past Purdue goalkeeper Emily Edwards to put the Terps on top. The Boilermakers evened the match late in the first half as Irene Campro scored in the 40th minute. The Two squads took a 1-1 tie into the break.

Heaven scored her second goal in as many matches in the 65th minute to net her second-career goal in her second-career start. Emily Lenhard her second assist of the season. It would go on to be the game-winner as Mckinley netted the decisive goal for a second straight match.  The Boilermakers outshot the Terps in the second half, but the Terps' defense held strong as Maryland recorded back-to-back conference wins for the first time since 2022, when the Terps also beat the Hoosiers and Boilermakers. 

How it Happened:
  • Maryland was awarded the contest's first corner in the second minute.
  • Purdue recorded the match's first shot in the fifth minute. 
  • Morales notched Maryland's first shot in the 15th minute. 
  • Faith Luckey made the match's first save in the 21st minute.
  • Luckey made another diving save in the 29th minute. 
  • Morales scored her third goal of the season on a free kick in the 30th minute. 
  • Purdue scored in the 40th minute to even the match.
  • Maryland opened the second half with a pair of quick shots.
  • Kelsey Smith had a nice shot opportunity in the 62nd minute. She led the team with three shots, two on goal.  
  • Heaven netted her second goal in the 65th minute to put the Terps ahead as Lenhard picked up an assist. 
  • Luckey made a crucial save in the 78th minute. 
  • Maryland fought off a corner in the 85th minute. 
  • The Terps fought off another vicious barage from Purdue in the closing minutes to seal the win.

Numbers to Know:
  • 4: Maryland improved to 4-4-1 all-time against Purdue and 3-1-1 in College Park.
  • 8: Luckey made eight saves as she faced 20 shots in the win, tying her career high in saves and the most she's made in a win. 
  • 8: Morales' goal brought her up to eight points on the season, good for second on the team.
  • 10: Smith leads the team with 10 points on the season. 
  • 2017: Maryland's six wins on the season are its most since a 7-8-3 campaign in 2017. 
  • 2022: The Terps won back-to-back conference matches for the first time since defeating both Indiana and Purdue to close the 2022 season.
