Maryland Earns 15-14 Walk-Off Win Over Delaware

Paul Jones II ended a back-and-forth affair with a timely RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland grabbed its first walk-off win of the season, 15-14, over Delaware on Paul Jones II's heroic RBI single to conclude a chaotic night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Blue Hens' Noah Burroughs hit two grand slams — including one with Delaware down to its final strike — but Maryland rallied in the ninth to move to 2-0 at home this season. The Terps won a wild one as Maryland loaded the bases in the ninth and Ryan Costello drove the game-tying run home before Jones II earned the Terps their fourth win of the season as Maryland survived a midweek scare.  Long before Delaware's six-run top of the ninth inning and Jones II's timely knock, the Terps and Blue Hens traded blows in the early parts of Tuesday's game. Maryland led after each inning of the back-and-forth affair, stringing together a series of timely hits when the Terps needed them the most.

Maryland pushed an early run across in the first inning. Brayden Martin walked, stole his fifth base on the young season, and scored on an RBI single from David Mendez to open Tuesday's scoring. Doubles from Rylen Stockton and Jackson Sirois built a 3-1 lead an inning later.

The third inning featured 11 total runs. The Blue Hens (1-7) opened it with a five-run frame — that featured a Noah Burroughs grand slam — before the Terps responded with a six-run inning of their own as Stockton, Antonio Morales, Ty Kaunas, and Costello plated runs with a quartet of RBI doubles.
A pair of long balls extended the lead in the fourth. Jones II left the yard for the first time this season before Bud Coombs followed it up with his first-career homer, plating two and putting Maryland ahead 12-7. The ninth inning featured eight total runs as Delaware took the lead and Maryland rallied for the win. Landon Edwards got the start in the pitcher-by-committee midweek contest that featured 12 total arms. Scoreless innings were hard to come by in the early goings of Tuesday's contest, yet Joseph Fredericks, Andrew Koshy, and James Gladden all worked blank frames before the wild ninth inning. Swope's Notes:
  • "This group's got good character. I think after the third inning, we could have started to hang our heads a little bit, but we just came right back."
  • "I've got to give credit to these guys and this group for sticking together. We needed that win, so it was a great comeback."
  • "It's always good to see guys drive the ball to the opposite field."
  • "Ryan's been a great addition so far, and Paul is swinging the bat pretty well. It's good to see both those guys get going."
  • "I was overall happy with the offense today. We had a little bit of a lull there in the middle, but there weren't a ton of runs this weekend. We've been on the barrel a lot, and a lot of good things are happening."
  • "I hope that adversity we faced last weekend propels us moving forward, along with this win tonight."
Paul's Perfect Timing:
  • "It was awesome. That's everything you really ever dream of as a kid in the backyard, just waiting for a big moment like that. Being able to come through like that is awesome for the team. Hopefully, we can use it going forward."
