Maryland Suffers Defeat To Ohio State

Elijah Saunders scored a season-high 20 points as the Terps battled the Buckeyes on Thursday night.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland fell 82-62 to the Ohio State Buckeyes late on Thursday night at XFINITY Center. The Terps celebrated their "Black Out / Club X" night, but dropped to 8-14 and 1-10 in Big Ten play.

Elijah Saunders drilled a trio of three-pointers in his season-high 20-point night as he captained the Terps' offensive efforts. Saunders scored in double figures for the ninth time this season and the 28th time in his career. He finished just two points shy of his career-high total while leading all scorers in Thursday's contest.

Andre Mills threw a ferocious dunk down and hit a pair of three-pointers as a part of his 11-point game, marking his third double-digit performance in his past four games. Solomon Washington led the Terps with eight rebounds during his 13-point night. Maryland utilized its 11th different starting lineup this season as Collin Metcalf made his third-career start.  Ohio State (14-8, 7-5 Big Ten) got 19 points from Christoph Tilly on a night where Maryland welcomed the legendary Red Panda into XFINITY Center for its halftime show. The Terps are back in action in a road game against Minnesota on Feb. 8.

Buzz Williams' Breakdown:
  • "Our offensive rebound percentage was the highest it's been in a long time.
  • "Our guys competed when the ball was on the ground as well as they have all year and competed when the ball was in the air at a high level."
  • "They had twice as many free throws and forced twice as many turnovers. I thought that was the difference."
  • "I thought we were sharing the ball much better."
  • "We didn't do a great job on the defensive glass, but we did a much better job on the offensive glass. We just had too high of a turnover rate."
  • "I thought Elijah was much more confident tonight."
  • "I have a lot of gratitude toward our guys for how hard they're continuing to fight and compete. I've got to continue to find ways to do better. I never want to justify losing in any sort of way, but I think the competitive spirit we play with is very strong."
