No. 1 Terps Open Season With 19-10 Win Over Loyola Maryland

Two new faces combined for nine goals in Maryland's 33rd straight season-opening win.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The No. 1 Terps opened their 101st season with a dominant 19-10 win over Loyola Maryland inside Jones-Hill House on Saturday afternoon. Leo Johnson scored five goals as the Terps used an eight-goal third quarter to earn their 25th-ever win over the Greyhounds.  Johnson and Chris Lyons paved the way, with five and four respective goals. After a back-and-fourth opening 20 minutes, the two Yale transfers gave the Terps a lead late in the second quarter and they never looked back in their second-ever game inside Jones-Hill House.  Maryland broke the game open with an eight-goal third period. Johnson sealed his first hat trick as a Terp with three of his five goals in the frame while Eric Spanos found the back of the net twice. The Terps scored the final seven goals of the quarter to cruise to their 33rd straight season-opening win.  Elijah Stobaugh and Spencer Ford each netted a pair of goals while Braden Erksa logged a team-high four assists. The Terps dominated the Greyhounds in faceoffs, grabbing 20 to Loyola Maryland's 12. Henry Dodge led the charge with 12 while Jonah Carrier snagged eight. Ruppel earned his ninth-career win in net, logging 10 saves to start his senior season.

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Ruppel made an early save on the Greyhounds' first possession.
  • Loyola Maryland struck first with a goal four minutes in.
  • Ford netted the Terps first goal of the season eight minutes into the contest to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Loyola Maryland reclaimed a 2-1 lead on a goal 11 minutes in.
  • Stobaugh scored his first goal of the season in the final minute.
  • Ruppel made five saves in the opening frame as the two teams sat tied after 15 minutes of action.
2nd Quarter:
  • Maryland took its first lead of the season on a Johnson goal early in the quarter. 
  • Loyola Maryland found the equalizer midway through the frame.
  • The Greyhounds grabbed a 4-3 lead with another score, but Lyons evened it up with four minutes to play. 
  • Lyons and Johnsons' second goals of the quarter gave Maryland a 6-4 lead at the half. 
3rd Quarter:
  • Spanos buried an early goal to extend the lead. 
  • The Greyhounds scored, but Spanos' second goal of the quarter kept Maryland up by three.
  • AJ Larkin got on the board to extend the lead to 10-5.
  • Johnson added two more goals while Stobaugh and Lyons added to a 7-0 Terps run.
  • Lyons hit a buzzer-beater to give Maryland a 14-5 lead to take into the final 15 minutes.
4th Quarter:
  • The Greyhounds scored the first three goals of the quarter before Johnny Gardiner logged his first goal of the season to push the lead to 15-8.
  • Lyons' fourth goal of the day put the Terps ahead by eight goals. 
  • Ford's second goal of the game extended the lead late. 
  • Hamish McPherson put Maryland up 18-8 with his first goal of the season.
  • Sisto Averno netted the Terps' final goal of the day. 
  • Maryland closed out a 19-10 win. 
Multi-Point Terps:
  • Johnson (five goals, one assist) recorded his 29th-career multi-goal game and his 41st multi-point performance.
  • Lyons (four goals) netted his 32nd-career multi-goal game and his 37th multi-point game of his career. 
  • Erksa (four assists) logged his 42nd-career multi-point game and his 10th-career multi-assist game.
  • Spanos (two goals, one assist) recorded his 25th multi-goal game and his 34th multi-point game, while pushing his point-scoring streak to 19 games. 
  • Stobaugh (two goals) recorded his fourth-career game with multiple goals. 
  • Ford (two goals) scored multiple goals for the first time in his career.
  • McPherson (one goal, one assist) logged his first multi-point game as a Terp.
Taming the Greyhounds:
  • Saturday marked the 27th all-time meeting between Maryland Loyola Maryland in a series dating back to 1940.
  • The Terps boast a 24-3 all-time record against the Greyhounds. 
  • Maryland took down Loyola Maryland in an 8-7 overtime thriller in Baltimore last season. Matthew Keegan scored the game-winning goal in overtime while Spanos netted a hat trick. 
Terps Playing in Jones-Hill House:
  • The Terps played their second-ever game inside Jones-Hill House on Saturday. 
  • Maryland took down Albany on Senior Day in 2022, marking the first Maryland athletic event inside the Cole Field House venue since the final men's basketball game of the 2002 season.
Season-Opening Success:
  • The Terps won their 33rd straight season opener, dating back to 1994. 
  • Maryland improved to 97-3-1 (.960) all-time in season openers, dating back to the program's first varsity season in 1924.
Home Cooking:
  • Maryland has now won 34 of its last 39 (.871) home games. The Terps were 4-1 at SECU Stadium last season.
  • The Terps are now 91-20 (8.19) overall in home games under Tillman since 2011.
