Maryland Comeback Falls Short in 69-65 Loss to Rutgers

Two Terps logged double-doubles as they donned their new Script Shift uniforms.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — After trailing by 20 points in the first half, Maryland used a 28-8 run to start the second half to erase the deficit and claim a lead, but Rutgers came away with a 69-65 win at XFINITY Center on Sunday afternoon. Two Terps logged double-doubles as Maryland donned its Script Shift uniforms, but the Terps fell to 11-18 (4-14 Big Ten) on the season. 

Andre Mills posted his first-career double-double to keep his hot streak rolling against Rutgers with 15 points and career-high 10 rebounds. Mills has scored in double figures in eight of his last nine games and 17 times in his freshman season.

Elijah Saunders also recorded his fourth-career double-double and his second of the season with 11 points and career-high 14 rebounds. He hit three of Maryland's six three-pointers as the 2025-26 Terps moved their season three-point total to 245, which is the seventh-highest single-season mark in program history. 

Solomon Washington pitched in 15 points and seven rebounds on Sunday afternoon while Collin Metcalf grabbed a season-high eight boards. The Terps dominated Rutgers on the glass, outgaining the Scarlet Knights 50-26 in the rebounding game.  After trailing 39-20 at the break, Maryland opened the second half on a 28-8 scoring run that featured 13 straight points as the Terps worked their way back into the contest and took their first lead with 11:28 to play. Rutgers, however, held on to move to 12-17 (5-13 Big Ten) on the season. 

How it Happened:
1st Half:
  • Adams got the Terps on the board with a free throw. 
  • Washington threw a dunk down for his first points of the day.
  • Saunders nailed a three-pointer for his first bucket of the afternoon.
  • Washington's third basket of the night cut the Rutgers lead to 17-12 midway through the half.
  • Rutgers pulled ahead to lead 39-20 at the half.
2nd Half:
  • Mills opened the scoring in the second half with a triple from the corner. 
  • Saunders drained a three-pointer as Maryland opened the half with back-to-back deep shots.
  • Mills nailed a triple as the Terps worked the Rutgers lead to 45-37.
  • Washington became the first Terp in double figures.
  • Isaiah Watts hit a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game and cap a 13-0 run. 
  • Mills reached double figures seven minutes into the half. 
  • Metcalf threw a dunk down to cut Rutgers' lead to 47-45.
  • Washington gave the Terps their first lead with a free throw with 11:26 to play.
  • Maryland and Rutgers exchanged blows as the Scarlet Knights claimed a 53-50 lead with 5:22 to play. 
  • Saunder sealed his double-double and tied the game with a pair of free throws with under five to play.
  • Mills grabbed a board to seal his double-double with 1:09 to play.
  • Rutgers held on for a 69-65 win.
Double-Digit Days:
  • Mills (15 points) scored in double figures for the 17th time in his impressive freshman season. 
  • Washington (15 points) tallied 10+ points for the 14th time this season and the 31st time in his career.
  • Saunders (11 points) scored in double figures for the 13th time this season and the 32nd time in his career.
  • Coit (10 points) pitched in double-digit points for the 17th time this season and the 73rd time in his career.

  • Mills has broken onto the Big Ten scene over the past month, netting double-digit points in eight of his last nine games. 
  • He's scored 15+ points six times across that span.
  • Mills has averaged 18.6 points over his last nine games and has tallied 17 double-digit games in his freshman season.
Diggy Delivers:
  • Coit added a 10-point performance to his impressive Big Ten season.
  • In his 18 conference games, he's averaging 15.1 points per game.
  • He's scored in double figures 17 times this season and posted five 20+ point performances.
