Terps Homer Twice In Big Ten-Opening Loss to Purdue

Lance Williams collected seven strikeouts against the Boilermakers.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland opened Big Ten play with a Friday night showdown against Purdue. The Terps hit a pair of homers, but the game got away from them late. The Boilermakers hit five homers, including an eighth-inning grand slam, to earn a 16-5 win and drop Maryland to 10-7 (0-1 Big Ten) on the season.

The two Big Ten teams each collected a pair of runs across the first two frames. Ty Kaunas plated the Terps' first run with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the first before Jordan Crosland left the yard with a solo shot in the second.  Crosland had a big day on both sides of the ball. His homer in the second marked his fourth of the season, and he made a spectacular diving catch in left field in the fourth to rob Purdue of extra bases. Evan Williams collected seven strikeouts across his season-high seven innings of work. He held Purdue to four runs on five hits and only issued two walks across his 107 pitches. His seven frames marked the longest outing from any Maryland starter in 2026. Aden Hill gave the Terps their first lead in the fourth inning with a 390-foot blast to left-center field that plated two. Purdue tied the game with homers in the fifth and seventh as Williams' night on the bump concluded. Hill singled a run home in the ninth to seal his three-RBI day. The Boilermakers (11-5, 2-2 Big Ten) broke the game open with Dylan Drake's grand slam in the eighth inning and an eight-run ninth to earn their 11th win of the season. The second game of the series is slated for Saturday at 2 PM.
