COLLEGE PARK, MD-  No. 11 Maryland (3–3) heads to University Park to open the 2026 Big Ten portion of its schedule, taking on No. 9 Penn State at Panzer Stadium at 3 p.m. after closing out the nonconference slate with a 13–12 triple-overtime thriller victory over Virginia.

The 2026 campaign represents the 101st season of Maryland men's lacrosse. The program has produced 532 All-Americans, appeared in 30 Final Fours, and captured four NCAA national championships. The Terps have finished .500 or better in every season.

Where we've been ...
  • The reigning national runner-up Terrapins are coming off an NCAA-best 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and their 30th Final Four overall, the most of any program. Maryland advanced to the NCAA Championship game for the ninth time in the last 14 tournaments and the 18th time in program history, beating Syracuse 14-8 in the NCAA Semifinal. The Terps finished 14–4 and recorded double-digit wins for the 22nd straight season, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.
  • Maryland heads into conference play after a dramatic 13–12 triple-overtime win over Virginia in College Park. Leo Johnson forced overtime with 39.5 seconds left, and Zach Whittier delivered the game-winner 3:35 into the third overtime. Brian Ruppel had a day in the cage saving 14 shots including two in triple overtime.

Series history
  • The Terps and Penn State will meet for the 16th time in program history, with their first matchup dating back to 1924. Maryland holds a commanding edge in the series, leading the Nittany Lions with 43 wins while dropping just two games.
  • Saturday's game marks the 12th consecutive meeting since the Terps joined the Big Ten and the 16th overall meeting in University Park. Maryland has yet to lose a game against Penn State in University Park.
  • Last season, the Terps and Nittany Lions met twice. In the regular season, the No. 2 Terps defeated the No. 7 Nittany Lions 13–8 in College Park. They met again in the Big Ten Conference semifinals, where Maryland secured a 10–8 victory to advance to the championship game.
About the coaches
  • John Tillman is in his 19th season as a head coach and his 16th with the Terps, owning a 217–78 career record for a .736 winning percentage, the highest among all active Division I coaches. Highlighted by an undefeated 2022 campaign, Tillman is 197-59 (.770)  as Maryland's head coach.
  • Jeff Tambroni enters his 16th season as head coach of Penn State men's lacrosse in 2026, ranking seventh among active Division I coaches with 239 career wins. Tambroni has led the Nittany Lions to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Final Four trips, and has guided Penn State to two Big Ten regular season titles and a conference tournament championship. He previously coached at Cornell where he helped the Big Red to a run to the 2009 national championship game.

Terps' 101st Season Of Lacrosse
  • The Terps boast an all-time record of 907-298-4 (.751), dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished with a .500 or better record in all previous 99 seasons.  The program reached the 800-win milestone with a 12-6 victory on April 12, 2017, at Albany and became just the third school with 900 wins on March 29, 2025, with a 13-8 win over Penn State.
  • Maryland finished the decade of the 2010s 134-42 for a .761 winning percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. Nine of those seasons came under the direction of head coach John Tillman, who has posted a 122-38 record and a .763 winning percentage at the helm for Maryland.   
  • During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
  • Midway through the 2020s, the Terrapins are 73-18 (.802), which is on pace for the second-best winning percentage for a decade behind only the 1950s when the Terps were 84-15-1 (.845). The only other decade with a winning percentage of .800+ was the 1970s, with a mark of 85-21 (.802).

Midway through the 2020s, the Terrapins are 73-18 (.802), which is on pace for the second-best winning percentage for a decade behind only the 1950s when the Terps were 84-15-1 (.845).
Early Success at the Face-off 
  • The Terps' face-off unit, featuring Henry Dodge and Jonah Carrier, is one of the most successful in the country, boasting a .626 win percentage that ranks fifth nationally.
  • Senior face-off specialist Dodge leads the charge for Maryland and the nation with a .712 win percentage, the best mark in the country.
Big Crowds come out for the terps
  • In 2026, Maryland is currently second in home attendance averaging, 3,052.
  • Maryland played in two of the three highest-attended regular-season games of the 2025 men's college lacrosse season, highlighted by a crowd of 10,137 fans when the Terps faced Notre Dame in Atlanta.
  • The Terps ranked second nationally in home attendance despite playing the fewest home games among the top five programs, drawing a total of 28,079 fans.
  • Maryland was also second nationally in average attendance in 2025 (4,011).
  • SECU Stadium also hosted the third-largest regular-season crowd of 2025 when Maryland welcomed Johns Hopkins, attracting 10,123 fans.
Active Career Leaders
  • Terp newcomers Leo Johnson, Chris Lyons, and Henry Dodge all rank on the national active career leaderboards in several categories.
  • Lyons is currently second in the the nation in career goals and goals per game, totaling 139 career goals and averaging 2.96 goals per game.
  • Johnson ranks among the top five nationally in total points with 197 and is also eighth in career goals with 118.
  • Dodge is second among active players nationally in career faceoff win percentage, having won 63.2% of his draws.
cONFERENCE domination
  • Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, Maryland is 44-11 (.800) in conference play.
  • The Terps are also a conference-best 12-6 (.667) all-time in Big Ten Tournament games. Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps have won at least a share of the Big Ten regular season titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022). The Terps have also won the Big Ten Tournament four times (2016, 2017, 2021, 2022).
