No. 1 Terps Suffer First Loss Of Season, 11-10, To No. 4 Northwestern

Kayla Gilmore scored a career-high three goals in Maryland’s lone loss of 2026.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The top-ranked Terps fell for the first time all season to No. 4 Northwestern, 11-10, at SECU Stadium in a Big Ten clash on Thursday night. The two teams were tied entering the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats outlasted Maryland to drop the Terps to 13-1 (5-1 Big Ten) in 2026. 

Kayla Gilmore scored a career-high three goals on Thursday as she netted three of Maryland's first four goals of the night. She sealed her first multi-goal game of the season with her two-goal first quarter as Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  Gilmore scored the first of Maryland's two-goal second quarter that helped the Terps take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Keeley Block and Jordyn Lipkin both scored in the initial half as Maryland held Northwestern to its fewest first-half goals of the season.

After Northwestern rallied with the first two goals of the second half, Kori Edmondson put Maryland back in front with her 35th goal of the season and the 173rd of her career. Kristen Shanahan scored Maryland's other goal of the frame as the game went tied into the final 15 minutes of action. Edmondson and Shanahan both logged multi-goal games against the Wildcats. Northwestern was led by a four-goal performance from Madison Taylor — the Big Ten's leading scoring. The Wildcats improved to 10-3 (4-1 Big Ten) on the season. Maryland is back in action with a pair of road games against Michigan and Ohio State next week. 

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • JJ Suriano made a save on a free-position shot in the second minute. 
  • Gilmore opened the scoring with her seventh goal of the year in the third minute of action.
  • Block wove through traffic to bury her 27th of the year and give the Terps a 2-0 lead.
  • Gilmore's second goal of the opening quarter built a 3-0 lead with 6:56 to play. 
  • Northwestern got on the board with 5:10 left in the quarter.
  • Suriano made three saves in the quarter as Maryland led 3-1 after 15 minutes of action.
2nd Quarter:
  • The Wildcats opened the scoring in the second quarter.
  • Gilmore sealed her hat trick with 9:10 to play in the half. 
  • Lipkin's 14th goal of the season gave Maryland a 5-2 lead.
  • Northwestern scored its third goal of the night with 5:15 to go. 
  • Maryland took a 5-3 lead into the break. 
3rd Quarter:
  • Northwestern opened the scoring early in the quarter to make it a one-goal game.
  • The Wildcats tied the game with 8:36 to play.
  • Suriano made a key save with five minutes left in the frame. 
  • Edmondson's 35th of the season put Maryland back ahead 6-5.
  • Northwestern tied the game back up at 6-6 with 2:58 left in the quarter. 
  • Shanahan's 30th goal of the season gave Maryland a 7-6 lead seconds later. 
  • The Wildcats tied the game with 1:01 to play. 
  • Suriano made five saves in the frame as the teams took a 7-7 tie into the final 15 minutes of action.
4th Quarter:
  • Lauren LaPointe's 48th goal of the season opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. 
  • Taylor's fourth goal of the night tied the game at 8-8 with 12:24 to play. 
  • Northwestern took its first lead in the opening five minutes.
  • The Wildcats used a 4-0 run to claim an 11-8 lead. 
  • Shanahan brought the Terps closer with her second goal of the day with 3:42 to play. 
  • Edmondson's second goal of the night made it a one-goal game with 58.7 seconds left. 
  • Northwestern closed out its 11-10 win.
Multi-Point Terps:
  • Gilmore (three goals, one assist) logged her fifth-career mulit-goal game and her seventh-career game with multiple points. 
  • Shanahan (two goals) scored multiple goals for the 25th time in her career and tallied multiple points for the 34th time.
  • Edmondson (two goals) logged her 54th multi-goal game and her 56th multi-point game of her career.
  • LaPointe (one goal, one assist) played in her 25th-career game with multiple points.
