Men's Tennis Drops Match To Virginia 7-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Maryland men's tennis team (4-11, 0-8 ACC) lost to No. 49 Virginia (11-5, 4-4 ACC) Tuesday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.
In singles competition, sophomore Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) dropped his record to 6-8 on the season, falling to Brian Vahaly 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 spot, senior Jonathan Neeter (Old Tappan, N.J.) lost to Huntley Montgomery 6-1, 6-1. Junior Jonathan Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) fell to 5-9 in singles competition this season, dropping his match against Brian Hunter 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 3 position. Senior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) got his third start of the season at the No. 4 spot, but couldn't muster the win, losing to Jason Romesburg 6-3, 6-2. Senior Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) played at the No. 5 position for the first time this season, losing to Jonathan Chou 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Greg Chambers (Silver Spring, Md.), in his third start, lost his first match of the season, falling to Gregory Alpert 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, Neeter and Chou teamed up for the 11th time this season, but could not pull off the victory over Vahaly and Montgomery, losing 8-2 at the No. 1 position. Murchison and senior Luan Nguyen (Tamuning, Guam) ended the regular season 6-7 together, falling to Chou and Hunter of Virginia 8-0 at the No. 2 spot on Tuesday. Chiu and Kenshalo played a tough match, but fell short of victory, losing to Alpert and Romesburg 9-8 at the No. 3 position. The loss drops their record together to 5-5 overall this season.
The Terps end the regular season 4-11, improving on last year's 3-12 mark. With the loss, Maryland dropped to 21-52-1 all-time against the Cavaliers. The men will next travel to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships to be held April 19-22.
