Men's Tennis Faces Virginia In Opening Round Of ACC Championships

TERPS FACE VIRGINIA IN FIRST ROUND OF ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS
* The Maryland men's tennis team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the ACC Championships held at the Millbrook Tennis Center Thursday through Sunday. Coach Laitta's squad drew the No. 8 seed matching them with No. 7 seeded Virginia in the first match Thursday at 10 a.m.
* The Terps enter the four day tournament 7-9 overall with a 1-6 record in conference play. In its most recent match, Maryland lost to No. 25 North Carolina, 7-0, last Saturday in College Park.
* Saturday marked the 12th and final home match of the Terps' inaugural season at the Tennis Center at College Park. Maryland finished the year 6-6 at the friendly confines of the tennis center.
* The 7-0 win over Coppin State earlier this season gave Coach Laitta's squad six wins for the first time since 1998. Last season, the Terps notched four victories overall.
* The victory over NC State on April 7 gave Maryland seven victories for the season, securing the most wins for the program in a season since 1992 when it went 11-10. The win also marked the program's first win in the ACC since 1992. Maryland is the only team in the conference without scholarship players on its roster.
A LOOK AT VIRGINIA
* Maryland will face Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday. The Terps dropped a 4-3 decision to the Cavaliers last week in College Park.
* In the April 9th match, Virginia won the doubles point taking two of three doubles matches while the Terps and Cavaliers split the singles matches, with each school notching three wins.
* Virginia owns an 11-11 record on the year with a 2-6 mark in the ACC. Most recently, the Cavaliers lost to No. 25 North Carolina, 6-1.
* Like Maryland, Virginia defeated NC State by a score of 4-3 earlier this season for its first ACC win. Also similar to the Terps, Virginia fell to No. 25 North Carolina in its most recent match.
* Virginia is led by freshman Stephen Nolen and senior Jason Romesburg who each own a team-high 20 victories. Romesburg owns 10 wins this season partnering with different opponents in doubles competition. Nolen is 20-16 overall on the year in singles play with a 2-0 record at the No. 2 position in conference matches.
RACKING UP THE WINS
* Freshmen Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) enter the weekend with 10 wins apiece to lead the team in victories in singles play this season. Causevic is 10-6 for the year at the No. 1 singles position with a 3-5 record in the ACC. Reichsfeld posts a 10-6 mark with a 3-5 record in conference play.
* In non-conference matches, Causevic is 7-1 with his only loss coming in a three-set thriller to Bence Hamori, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6, in the spring season opener vs. American.
* Causevic and senior Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) own eight victories at the top doubles spot and enter the weekend ranked 50th nationally.
* The freshmen tandem of Reichsfeld and Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) have a team-high nine wins at the No. 2 position this season.
* Maryland's three doubles teams have combined to win four matches in the ACC this season.
LAST TIME OUT
* The Tar Heels, ranked No. 25 nationally by the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, proved to be to much for the Terps, defeating Maryland, 7-0.
* Carolina captured a win in every match, taking the doubles point and overpowering the Terps at every position in singles play.
* In doubles competition, Haris Causevic and Jonathan Murchison, ranked 50th in the nation, lost to 51st ranked Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer of the Tar Heels at the No. 1 position, 8-2. The loss dropped the pair to 8-5 for the season at the No. 1 position.
* Causevic fell at the No. 1 spot in singles to Petrone, ranked 53rd nationally. The loss drops the freshman's record to 3-5 in the ACC.
* WithSaturday's loss in the regular season finale, Maryland finishes the season 7-9 with a 1-7 record in the ACC.
CAUSEVIC CLAIMED ACC TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR APRIL 10
* Haris Causevic was honored as the men's tennis ACC player of the week on April 10 after the freshman helped lead Maryland to a 4-3 upset victory over NC State on April 7.
* The freshman beat Matt Lucas of the Wolfpack, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) at the No. 1 singles spot. In doubles, he teamed up with Murchison to defeat Lucas and RJ Murray, 9-8 (5).
TENNIS AWARDED PRESIDENT'S CUP
* The men's tennis team was awarded the sixth annual President's Cup, recogniz- ing the team with the highest cumulative GPA over the past two semesters at the University of Maryland, in a reception last Sunday at the Inn and Conference Center on campus.
* The President's Cup award ceremony began in 1997 in an effort to recognize student-athletes who excel in academics and community service.

Saturday - April 20 Semifinal Round Match 6 - Match 2 winner vs. Match 3 winner - 10 a.m. Match 7 - Match 4 winner vs. Match 5 winner - 1 p.m.
Sunday - April 21 Championship Match 8 - Match 6 winner vs. Match 7 winner - 11 a.m.
