TJ Ryan enters his first season at Maryland in 2025–26 and his eighth overall as a member of head coach Buzz Williams’ staff. He spent the previous six seasons at Texas A&M, including four as the program’s Director of Scouting, where he contributed significantly to one of the most successful stretches in program history.
During his time in College Station, the Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament three years in a row and recorded four consecutive 20-win seasons—marking just the second time in program history that feat had been achieved. Texas A&M also advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals three times, including two appearances in the championship game.
At Maryland, Ryan plays a comprehensive role in the program's success. He collaborates with Assistant Coach Lyle Wolf to coordinate the team’s offensive system and supports Coach Williams in designing and executing special teams situations, such as baseline and sideline out-of-bounds plays, after-timeout actions, and late-game strategy. In addition to practice planning and implementation, Ryan helps lead the team’s physical, digital, and video playbook development.
A strong communicator and relationship-builder, Ryan is deeply involved in recruiting strategy and execution. He evaluates high school and transfer portal prospects, produces custom film edits and content, and plays a central role in shaping the program’s recruiting vision. His ability to connect with student-athletes and their families—combined with a deep understanding of the game—makes him a valuable asset on the recruiting trail.
Player development is another core strength. Ryan helps design and implement individualized development plans, drawing from film analysis, practice data, and advanced tools such as HD Intelligence and NOAH Analytics. He collaborates closely with coaches and players to improve skill sets and performance, blending analytics with on-court instruction to maximize growth.
In scouting and game preparation, Ryan continues to apply his extensive experience by creating in-depth opponent reports and managing performance and scouting analytics. He analyzes team and player tendencies, contributes to game planning, and leads the collection of practice data to track performance trends.
Ryan began his Division I coaching career at Virginia Tech in 2018–19 as a Graduate Manager under Coach Williams. He followed Williams to Texas A&M in 2019 as a Program Aide and quickly rose through the staff ranks into advanced roles in scouting, player development, and operations.
Before entering the Division I level, Ryan spent four years at Franklin College (’18) in Indiana, where he transitioned from player to student assistant coach. He led on-court development efforts, contributed to scouting and recruiting, and helped sign back-to-back classes that laid the foundation for a conference title run.
Ryan also gained experience working at elite basketball camps across the country and learning from nationally recognized trainers, giving him a broad foundation in player development philosophy. Internationally, he interned with professional clubs in Spain and Germany, adding a global perspective to his coaching toolbox.
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Ryan graduated from Franklin College in 2018 with a degree in psychology. He is the son of Kristy and Tom Ryan. His father is the longtime Director of Athletics and former head men’s basketball coach at Division II Eckerd College.
