Jake Bernhardt returned to College Park as an assistant coach in July 2022, and will enter his second season with the program in 2024.
In his first season back as a Terp, Bernhardt was tasked with taking over an offense that was without its top five point-scorers from 2022. Under Bernhardt's guidance, the Terps scored at least 11 goals in 14 of 16 games and made their 20th straight postseason appearance. Bernhardt also played a big role in the development of Braden Erksa who went on to lead the Terps in points as a freshman and became the school's first-ever Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Additionally, midfielder Kyle Long garnered Honorable Mention USILA All-American Honors.Â
Prior to coming back to Maryland, Bernhardt spent the five seasons at the University of Vermont working under fellow Terp alum Chris Feifs. During his tenure the Catamounts won the America East twice, made their first two NCAA Tournaments in program history, and went 44-24.
Working primarily with the team's offense, Bernhardt schemed a balanced effort that featured nine individuals with at least ten points while four players had more than 50Â points. The team averaged 13.3 goals per game over the last two campaigns.Â
Under Bernhardt's tutelage, the Catamounts featured All-Americans Ian MacKay and Thomas McConvey.Â
During his time in College Park, he was a two-time team captain known for his hard work and leadership. A fantastic midfielder, Bernhardt racked up 49 goals, 14 assists, and 63 points. After graduation he spent the 2014 season as the team's Director of Operations.Â
A Longwood, Florida, native, Bernhardt was drafted 12th overall in the 2012 MLL Draft. He has won three professional Championships and been named to three professional all-star games. He is currently in his 12th professional season, currently playing for the Whipsnakes LC. With 117 games under his belt, he has 30 CT, 131 GB, and 130 points.Â
Bernhardt has also competed for Team USA previously and helped the nation win Gold at the 2018 World Championships.Â
Bernhardt spent time as head varsity coach and transition teacher at Lake Brantley High School back home in Florida. In 2016 he was named Central Florida Coach of the Year. Â
The older brother of fellow assistant coach Jesse, the brothers are reunited back in College Park. The pair were both on the Terps' roster from 2010-13. In 2014, when Jake was Director of Operations, Jesse was also on the staff as volunteer assistant coach.Â
