Mark serves as Maryland’s Senior Associate Athletics Director and is a member of the department’s Executive Team, helping guide strategic initiatives and operational excellence across Maryland Athletics.
Since joining Maryland’s executive leadership team in 2019, Sherburne has played a key role in shaping the department’s response to the evolving landscape of college athletics, including scholarship reform, name, image and likeness (NIL), revenue sharing, governance, and legislative changes. He serves as the sport administrator for Maryland men’s basketball, wrestling, and softball while providing oversight for compliance, strength and conditioning, information technology, and sport administration.
Sherburne represents Maryland Athletics on the Big Ten Olympic Sport Oversight Committee, serving on both the officiating and replay committee and the softball committee. He also leads head coach and administrative searches, oversees departmental policies and procedures, manages strategic projects and budgets, and contributes to donor cultivation and stewardship efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he chaired Maryland Athletics’ Return to Play Subcommittee, helping guide the department through unprecedented operational challenges.
Prior to his current role, Sherburne served as Maryland’s Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities, Operations, and Events from 2017-19. In that position, he oversaw facilities, event operations, and game management for the Terrapins’ 20-sport Division I program, including serving as game administrator for football and men’s basketball. He also supervised the wrestling program and led the national search that resulted in the hiring of the program’s head coach.
Before arriving at Maryland, Sherburne owned Athletics Consulting Services, SP, where he provided strategic planning, fundraising, event management, and organizational consulting services to athletic departments and organizations nationwide. He played an instrumental role in the transition of the Division I Athletic Directors’ Association into LEAD1 Association and helped coordinate the organization’s inaugural gala and strategic planning efforts.
Sherburne served as Director of Athletics at Lock Haven University from 2013-15, overseeing 18 NCAA Division I and II varsity programs and more than 400 student-athletes. Prior to Lock Haven, Sherburne spent more than two decades at Penn State University in a variety of leadership roles.
A former Penn State student-athlete, Sherburne was a member of the football team’s 1986 national championship squad and also competed in baseball. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Logistics from Penn State in 1991 and a Master of Education in Counselor Education from Penn State in 1993.
