1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Durham Bulls Athletic Park Durham, N.C. May 12-17, 1998
THE SEASON: The Terps finished the regular season with a record of 26-29-1 and a mark of 5-18 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland enters the tournament as the eighth seed and faces ninth seeded Virginia on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the opening game of the tournament. The 26 wins amassed by the Terps this season is the most since 1992 when Maryland finished with a 27-28-1 record.
TERPS OPEN AGAINST VIRGINIA: The Terps face the Cavaliers in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday, May 12. Maryland won two of three games against Virginia at Shipley Field this season by 7-4 and 10-3 counts on April 10th and 11th, respectively. Head coach Tom Bradley owns a 14-10 record against the Cavaliers in his eight years at Maryland.
TOP TERP TOM BRADLEY AND STAFF: Head coach Tom Bradley, now in his eighth season at the helm of the Terp program, has registered a 196-239-4 mark at his alma mater. Overall, Bradley owns a career mark of 627-530-5 in 20 seasons, which includes a 431-291-1 record at Jacksonville University where he coached from 1979-88. Bradley is joined by Associate Head Coach Kelly Kulina and Assistant Coach Jim Flack.
TALE OF TWO SEASONS: After a 8-18-1 start in their first 27 games, the Terps finished 18-11 in their last 29 games of the season. In the "second half" of the season, the Terps registered a seven-game winning streak, the longest in Tom Bradley's tenure at Maryland. The Terps also went a stretch were they won 10-of-11 games, including two wins over Virginia. In their last 29 games, the Terps didn't lose more than three consecutive games.
ACC RECORD: The Terps won five conference games this season but were involved in five games in which they lost by two runs or less. Although Clemson and Wake Forest combined for a 6-0 record against the Terps, Maryland lost 5-3 to the Tigers on March 30 and lost 5-4 to Demon Deacons on April 18. Maryland's other close loses were to Duke, 5-3, Georgia Tech, 3-2 and NC State, 7-5.
TERPS TAKE ONE FROM FSU & GT: Maryland's 14-6 win against Florida State on March 26 broke the Seminoles' 15-game winning streak and marked the Terps' first win against FSU since a 6-4 decision in 1994 at Dick Howser Stadium. With their 4-1 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday, the Terps ended the Yellow Jackets' 10-game streak against Maryland dating back to 1994.
STRIKEOUT LEADER: Senior right-hander and co-captain Brandon Agamennone became Maryland's all-time strikeout leader when he fanned Duke's Michael Fletcher in the fourth inning on April 26. Agamennone passed current Minnesota Twin Eric Milton's (1994-96) mark of 236. He enters the tournament with 88 strikeouts this season and 246 in his career.
GO TO GUY: In addition to his strikeout totals, Agamennone is Maryland's all-time leader in starts and innings pitched. Coming into the tournament, he has 41 starts to his credit and 263 innings pitched.
TERPS BY THE NUMBERS2 Shortstop Casey Trout has not gone more than two consecutive games without a hit this season.
4 Four Terps have double-digit steals this year (Long, 33; Blue, 17; Thomas, 12 and Trout, 11).
5 Maryland hit five grand slams in the regular season.
5 Brandon Agamennone recorded at least five strikeouts in 10 games this year.
13 Maryland has won 13 of 17 games played at night. 18 The Terps won 18 of their last 29 games to close the season.
20 Chris Blue holds the all-time sacrifice hit record at Maryland with 20.
26 In Maryland's 26 wins this season, the Terps batted .350 with an ERA of 3.60
115 115 of the Terps' 330 RBI have come with two outs.
28 In his last 28 stolen base attempts, Larry Long has been caught one time. During the season, Long had stolen 21 consecutive bases.
.292 Maryland is batting .292 with runners in scoring position.
34 Scott Bronowicz has struck out only 34 times in 198 at bats this season.
35 Scott Bronowicz has more walks (35) than strikeouts this season (34).
48 The Terps recorded at least one double in 48 of their 56 games in 1998.
TRIPLE CROWN: Senior co-captain Scott Bronowicz leads the team in hitting, home runs and RBI this season after getting off to a slow start in Maryland's first 19 games. After the Clemson series, Bronowicz was hitting .191 with one home run, five doubles and 11 RBI. Since the Clemson series, he is hitting .423 and finished the regular season at .343.
NO K HERE: In 198 at bats this season, Bronowicz has struck out only 34 times. In his last 36 games, he has recorded 130 at bats and has struck out only 19 times.
CASEY AT THE PLATE: Casey Trout has made the most of his single season record for at bats at Maryland. The shortstop leads the team in hits (76), doubles (21), triples (3) and runs scored (61) in his 232 at bats. Trout entered the 1998 campaign with a career batting mark of .204 and is hitting a career-best .328 to date this season.
TERPS ON THE RUN: Maryland stole a school record 94 bases this season, eclipsing the old mark of 84 established in 1992. Lacking a big offensive attack this season, the Terps ran more often this season, evident in the fact that Larry Long led Maryland in stolen bases last year with nine.
LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT: Leading the charge in the stolen base category this season, sophomore Larry Long established the single season mark with his 32nd steal against Richmond on May 3. Long broke Howie Dare's mark of 31 thefts set 41 years ago in 1957, as the speedster has stolen 33 bases in 38 attempts this year.
HIT PARADE: Due to injuries in the outfield, back-up first baseman Adam Ross has played left field in Maryland's last 37 games. After struggling at the plate and hitting .071 in his first 16 games, he has since batted .350 in his remaining games and finished the regular season at .290.
GUNNING 'EM DOWN: J.R. Thomas has shown his arm strength and accuracy this season as the senior has recorded nine assists from his right field position, including three plays at home plate.
IF IT WEREN'T FOR BAD LUCK, I'D HAD HAVE NO LUCK AT ALL: After recording 15 hits, including five home runs, and scoring 14 runs in his last 10 games, first baseman Jason Mohap was hit by a pitch that broke his right hand in the Towson game on May 6. Mohap had missed 17 games earlier this season after his left hand was broken when he was hit by the same Towson pitcher on March 17.
CONFIDENCE BOOSTER: Freshman DH Brian Patenaude is batting .379 and has scored five runs in his last eight games. After playing third base for a few games early in the season, he has settled down in the DH position. Since the Virginia Commonwealth game on April 2, Patenaude has hit safely in 20 of his last 27 games.
