COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 7 Terrapins look to get back on the winning
side of the ledger after a 13-4 loss at Virginia last Saturday. Maryland
travels to Annapolis to continue one of the most storied rivalries in
lacrosse and the state of Maryland as the Terps face-off with No. 9
Navy. Maryland and Navy have played 72 previous times since 1924 with
Maryland holding a 43-28-1 advantage. The Terps have won the last six
meetings including a 21-7 decision last season. That was the largest
margin of victory for Maryland since it began fielding a varsity team.
RECORDS & RANKINGS
Maryland, 6-2 overall this season and 1-2 in the ACC, is coming off a
14-3 season in which it advanced to the NCAA Championship game for the
third time in four years. The Terps also captured the ACC championship
last year by winning the ACC Tournament and posted a perfect 3-0 record
in conference play. This season, Maryland has defeated Denver,
Providence, Penn State, Cornell, Dartmouth and North Carolina, with the
losses coming to No. 3 Duke and No. 6 Virginia.
Navy comes into Saturday's game with a 5-3 record after a stunning
overtime victory over then-No.7 Georgetown, 12-11 last Saturday. The
Midshipmen have defeated North Carolina, Penn, Radford, Air Force and
Georgetown while falling to No. 11 UMBC, No. 3 Duke and No. 8 Delaware.
In the most recent 1999 STX/USILA poll of April 5, Maryland was ranked
No. 7 and Navy is ranked No. 9. In the Face-Off Yearbook media poll of
April 5, Maryland is ranked No. 7 and Navy is No. 10. In the most recent
Baltimore Sun poll of April 5, Maryland is ranked No.7 and Navy is
ranked No. 8.
Maryland's schedule this season features nine teams ranked in the top
20 of the STX/USILA and Face-Off Yearbook media polls.
COACHES
Maryland's Dick Edell (Towson '67), now in his 27th season as a head
coach and 16th at the helm of Maryland, ranks among the all-time
coaching greats in lacrosse history. Edell became the all-time
winningest coach in ACC history when the Terps upset No. 1 Loyola in the
NCAA semifinals, 19-8 on May 23, 1998. With the win, Edell passed Jim
Adams who had recorded a 137-60 record with Virginia in 15 seasons.
Currently, Edell has a career ACC record of 144-65 (.689). With a
lifetime record of 255-112 (.695) over the last 26 years following
stints at the University of Baltimore, Army and Maryland, Edell is the
nation's second-winningest active coach. Ironically, the only coach
Edell trails on the active list is Jack Emmer (270-142), who succeeded
Edell at Army in 1984. "Big Man" as he is affectionately known, has led
his teams to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances (15 in Division I),
including 11 at Maryland. He has also led the Terps to three ACC
championships and three NCAA championship game appearances. He was named
the national coach of the year by the USILA in 1978 and 1995. He was
also selected as the ACC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1992 and 1998.
Richie Meade of Navy is in his fifth season at the helm of the Middies.
He has led them to a 28-29 (.491) record since 1995 when he took over
for Bryan Matthews. Prior to returning to Annapolis, where he had been
an assistant from 1983-88, Meade was an assistant at Army, North
Carolina and Duke. Meade also spent four years as the head coach of the
University of Baltimore from 1979-83, compiling a 27-23 record before
the school dropped its athletic program.
SERIES HISTORY
The Maryland-Navy rivalry is the second- longest in Terrapin lacrosse
history with Maryland holding a 43-28-1 advantage, dating to 1924. The
43 wins are the second-highest number of victories Maryland has against
any team. Maryland has defeated Duke 47 times. Including games played
from 1912-1923, when Maryland fielded a club team, the Terps hold a
45-33-1 edge.
Maryland has won the last six meetings in the series including a 21-7
decision at Byrd Stadium on April 4, 1998. The Terps last defeat at the
hands of the Middies came 1992, when Navy won 11-3.
During the 1990s, Maryland has won eight of the nine meetings.
Maryland has also won all four meetings in the NCAA Tournament. The
Terps captured their last national championship in 1975 with a 20-13 win
over Navy. Maryland also defeated Navy in NCAA semifinal games in 1971,
1976 and 1979.

MARYLAND'S LAST GAME
APR. 3, 1999 - #6 VIRGINIA 13, #5 MARYLAND 4
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Attackmen Drew McKnight and Tucker Radebaugh
scored four goals each to lead Virginia to a 13-4 win over Maryland in
men's lacrosse action at Kloeckner Stadium. The win was Virginia's ACC
opener and improved the Cavaliers' record to 5-2 overall. The
fifth-ranked Terrapins dropped to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
The Virginia defense also proved outstanding, limiting the visiting
Terrapins to one goal in the final 54 minutes of the game as freshman
goalie Derek Kenney recorded eight saves on the afternoon. Kenney was
forced to make just one save in the second half as the Cavaliers
controlled the ball for most of the final 30 minutes.
The Cavaliers took the early lead on McKnight's first goal of the
afternoon less than three minutes into the contest. The Terrapins
responded with three consecutive goals in just over a minute as Matt
Brock, Jeff Shirk and Brian Zeller tallied for Maryland. The Terps'
third goal came with 9:14 remaining in the first quarter.
Maryland's only other goal come from senior Scott Hochstadt, who scored
with 1:59 left in the third quarter. The goal moved Hochstadt into a tie
for seventh on the all-time goal scoring list with Dave Dempsey with 107
career goals. Hochstadt also had Maryland's only assist to give him 21
points on the season to lead the team. He also stands alone in 18th on
the all-time point scoring list with 136 points.
Virginia countered Maryland's run with a nine-goal run of its own with
McKnight and Radebaugh each scoring three times during the run.
McKnight's overhand crank off a Conor Gill feed with 14:15 left in the
second quarter proved to be the winner for the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers
led 7-3 at halftime and out-scored Maryland 6-1 in the second half.

APR. 4, 1998 - MARYLAND 21, NAVY 7
No. 1 Maryland exploded to score a season-high 21 goals en route to a
convincing 21-7 victory over No. 14 Navy at Byrd Stadium. The victory
made the 1998 seniors the winningest class in school history as they
earned their 41st win since coming to College Park in 1995.
The game was never in jeopardy as the Terps scored on their first three
shots and led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. Maryland led 10-6 at
the half and 18-4 after three quarters.
The 14-goal margin of victory was the largest Maryland win in a series
that began in 1912. The Terps received goals from 14 different players,
including three from Matt Hahn and Marc Sullivan.
Hahn's three goals gave him 120 for his career and moved him into sole
possession of fourth place on the school's all-time list. He also
extended his consecutive point scoring streak to 53 games.
Scott Hochstadt led Maryland in scoring, netting a then-career-high
tying six points on two goals and four assists.
