Box Score

FORT MILL, S.C. -- Duke used Larry Broadway's two-RBI double in the top of the 10th inning and a solid Kevin Thompson relief performance to defeat Maryland 6-4 Tuesday in the ACC Baseball Tournament play-in game at Knights Stadium. Duke (17-39) advances to the ACC First Round game against No. 1 seed and No. 3 ranked Georgia Tech (42-14) Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Maryland concludes its season at 24-33 overall. With the scored deadlocked at 4-4, Broadway looped a two-out, 0-1 pitch into left field to drive in the winning runs in the 10th inning. The hit came after David Mason singled and Jeff Becker walked with two outs.

Duke reliever Kevin Thompson (2-3) threw the final 1 2/3 innings for the victory. He entered the game in the ninth inning with one out and the bases loaded and got two ground balls to send the game into extra innings. Then he came back in the tenth to register the final three outs.

"I'm feeling good right now," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "I told our guys we finally got it done. Now that we're in the tournament we are going to play the spoilers' role. That takes a huge burden off of us. We're going to come out, play hard and see if we can upset some people."

Duke grabbed an early 4-1 lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Wes Goodner's fourth inning sacrifice fly gave the Blue Devils their first run. Goodner's RBI single, Troy Caradonna's RBI single and Kevin Kelly's fly ball scored Duke's three runs in the sixth.

Maryland charged back to tie the game at 4-3 with two runs in the seventh on Sean Lomas' RBI single and Kevin McDonald's RBI double. The Terrapins tied the game at 4-4 on Craig Munroe's solo home run in the ninth before Duke's Thompson got the final two outs.

Duke starter Ryan Caradonna pitched eight innings and allowed 10 hits and four runs (three earned). He struck out four of his 33 batters faced. Maryland reliever Mark Martin (2-7) took the loss after throwing the final 3.0 innings.

Broadway led Duke with a 3-5, two RBI day and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. David Mason (2-4) and Jeff Becker (2-4) each collected two hits apiece and Wes Goodner went 1-4 with two RBI.

Duke will play Georgia Tech tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Knights Field. The Blue Devils defeated Georgia Tech two of the three-game series in Atlanta March 24-26.
