COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Lonny Baxter had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and
Byron Mouton scored 18 points as No. 2 Maryland coasted to a 99-67 exhibition
victory over Nike Elite on Tuesday night.
Steve Blake had 10 assists and Juan Dixon scored 15 points for the
Terrapins, who used a 21-4 run to turn an 11-point halftime cushion into a
60-32 lead.
Maryland opened its season last week, losing to Arizona before defeating
Temple in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. This
exhibition served as a bridge between that tournament and Saturday's home
opener against American.
Quincy Wadley scored 15 points for Nike Elite, a collection of former
college players coached by former Michigan and Arizona State coach Bill
Frieder. Coming off a loss at North Carolina, Nike Elite fell behind early and
offered little resistance.
Baxter and Blake each had six points and Mouton added five in Maryland's
decisive run at the outset of the second half. The Terrapins went 10-for-12
from the field during the spree after missing 26 of 40 shots in the first half.
Nike Elite was 2-for-13 from 3-point range and 0-for-5 from the free throw
line in falling behind 39-28 at halftime.
Baxter started the game with successive dunks, and Mouton had seven points
as the Terrapins took a 15-7 lead. It was 25-20 before Dixon made a driving
layup and Tahj Holden hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run that put Maryland up
by 14.
