Maryland vs. Monmouth: Postgame Notes

Dec. 11, 2001

Recap| Box Score| Quotes

  • Maryland's 91-55 victory gives the Terps (No. 2 USA Today/ESPN/No. 3 AP) their eighth win in a row, marking the fourth-longest win streak in Gary Williams' career at Maryland. The Terrapins have not suffered a loss since the season-opener against now-No. 8/7 Arizona and have won 18 of their last 21 dating to the 2000-01 season. Ninety-one points is the most the Terrapins have scored this season.

  • Williams now owns a 250-140 record at Maryland over 13 seasons. Among active coaches, only Jim Boeheim (609, Syracuse, 25 seasons), Gale Catlet (436, West Virginia, 24 seasons) and Eddie Sutton (258, Oklahoma State, 11 seasons) total more victories as head coaches of their alma maters. In addition, Maryland's season-opening 8-1 record ties for the third best Terrapin start during the Williams era.

  • The win extends Maryland's national-leading non-conference home court win streak to 82. The streak began almost 12 years ago on Dec. 30, 1989, with a 110-91 Terp win over Alcorn State.

  • Five Terrapins -- Juan Dixon (game-high 18 points), Byron Mouton (17), Tahj Holden (11), Chris Wilcox (10) and Lonny Baxter (10) -- scored in double-figures, marking the first time since the NCAA West Regional Final against Stanford (March 24, 2001) that the Terps have had as many double-digit scorers.

  • With 13 rebounds, Wilcox also posted his second double-double this season and second for his career. He also posted a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) against Delaware State (11-24-01).

  • Maryland turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 30-point advantage by the 12:37 mark in the second half. The Terps held the Hawks to only 18 second-half points on 6-of-26 (.231) field goal shooting in the second half and 37% shooting for the game. The Terrapins have held 13 of their last 18 opponents to 40% shooting or lower.

  • The Terrapins were 12-of-14 (.857) from the free throw line in the first half and finished 23-of-30 (.767) for the game. The Terps have posted a .788 free throw percentage in the last four games after shooting .534 in their first five games. Baxter was 6-of-8 (.750) and has now hit 19 of his last 23 free throws (.826).

  • With a game-high 18 points, senior guard Dixon became only the tenth Terp in Maryland basketball history to score 1,700 points in a career. He is tenth all-time Terp scoring chart, and his career total is only four points shy of ninth-place Terp great Walt Williams, who totaled 1,704 from 1989-92. He needs only 34 more to move ahead of former teammate Terence Morris, who amassed 1,733 points from 1998-01.

  • Junior big man Tahj Holden remains hot for the Terps, chipping in with his third-consecutive game of double-figure scoring. Holden shot 4-of-8 (.500) from the floor and 3-of-3 from the line to finish with 11 points. He has 40 points in the last three games.

  • Guard/forward Byron Mouton scored 10 of his season-high 17 points in the first half marking his second-straight game in double-figures. The energetic senior has contributed 30 points in the last two games after scoring 18 points in the previous four games combined.

  • Junior point guard Steve Blake moved into Maryland's 10th place for career 3-point field goals when he hit one in the first half. He now totals 84 and is tied with former Terp Exree Hipp, who sank that many 3-pointers from 1993-96.

  • Freshman point guard Andre Collins made his fourth appearance in a Terp uniform and finished with a career-high six points in five minutes.

  • Senior walk-on guard Earl Badu made his eighth appearance in a Terp uniform and scored the first two points of his career as the clock wound down in the second half.
