COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland sophomore RHP Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) tossed his first-career complete game as the Terrapins upset No. 21 Wake Forest, 9-4, Saturday evening at Shipley Field. A season-high crowd of 1,013 fans watched the first complete game thrown by a Maryland pitcher this season as Schmoll fanned five and allowed just one earned run over his nine innings of work. The victory for Maryland was the first over Wake Forest at Shipley Field since April 12, 1991, when the Terps downed the Deacs 7-6.
Wake Forest scored one run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Corey Slavik got the Deacs on the board with a RBI single to score Corey Sullivan.
Maryland got on the board in the second with a run to tie the contest at one. Senior RF Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) got things started in the frame with a double to left center. Later in the inning, freshman C Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) drove him in with a RBI groundout.
The Terps took the lead for good in the third with three runs. Sophomore SS John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) got things going with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error by Wake Forest SS Jamie Athas. Freshman Jeremy Suarez (Middletown, N.J.) advanced from second on the play to give the Terps' their first lead of the game at 2-1. Senior 3B Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) then drove in a run with a RBI groundout and junior DH Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) delivered a sacrifice fly to give Maryland a 4-1 advantage.
After a run by the Deacs in the top of the fourth, the Terrapins would add on another two runs in the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-2. Sophomore LF Edwin Thompson (Jay, Maine) started the scoring with a RBI double down the left field line to score junior 1B Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.). Swope (3-for-5, 3RBI) then drove in one of his three RBIs on the night with a single to center to score Thompson.
The four-run lead was more than enough for Schmoll. The Rockville product retired 11-straight Wake Forest batters between the fourth and seventh innings to cruise to his second win of the season.
The Terps tacked on three more runs in the sixth to put the game away. The three-run frame was highlighted by Swope's sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to push the Maryland lead to 9-2.
Wake Forest added two runs in the eighth inning to close out the scoring at 9-4.
Easter finished the contest 2-for-2 with two doubles for the Terps. The pair of two-baggers also made Easter Maryland's all-time leader in doubles with 46 for his career.
The Terps move to 14-29 overall and 4-15 in the ACC with the victory. The loss sends Wake Forest to 33-15 and 15-8 in the conference.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Shipley Field.
