COLLEGE PARK, Md.- David Reaver went 3-for-5 with four RBIs as Richmond downed Maryland, 13-6, in the first game of a three-game series Thursday afternoon at Shipley Field.
After three scoreless innings to start the contest, Richmond broke the ice first with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Manny Cicchiello got the first RBI of the game with a RBI triple and Chris Dolan hit a sacrifice fly to score the two Richmond runs.
Maryland would tie the game at two with two runs in the home half of the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Edwin Thompson (Jay, Maine) jacked his first career home run, a two-run shot, to tie the contest at two.
The Spiders responded with eight runs over the next two innings to put the game away. In the fifth, Richmond used four hits including a RBI double by Vito Chiaravalotti and a RBI triple from Cicchiello to build the lead to 6-2.
In the sixth, the Spiders tallied five more hits to put another four-spot on the board. Chiaravalotti drilled a two-run double down the left field line and Adam Tidball launched a two-run homer to deep left field to put Richmond ahead, 10-2.
The Terrapins did not go quietly as they scored three runs in the seventh. Senior Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) delivered the big hit with a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left to make the score 10-5 Richmond. Lomas finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs in his final game in front of the home crowd at Shipley Field.
Richmond scored another three runs in the ninth and the Terps managed one run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final, 13-6.
Richmond starter Thomas Martin tossed six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits to improve to 7-5. Maryland starting pitcher Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) yielded six runs in five innings of work to fall to 2-8.
