COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Juniors Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) and John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) have been named preseason standouts for the state of Maryland by Prospects Plus, a national publication that is a joint venture of Baseball America and Perfect Game USA. The December-January issue listed all the top collegiate and high school players in the country for the draft classes of 2002, 2003 and 2004.
McCurdy was tabbed the No. 1 collegiate prospect in the state for the 2002 Major League Baseball Amateur draft. As a sophomore, McCurdy batted .300 with six home runs and 32 runs batted in. The Maryland native also led the team with 12 stolen bases in 16 attempts.
Ainsworth was selected as the state's No. 3 collegiate prospect for the upcoming draft. A hard-throwing right-hander from Pennsylvania, Ainsworth was one of the Terps' three weekend starters last season. Ainsworth finished the 2001 campaign with a 3-3 record and a 6.92 ERA.
Both players will begin practice for the 2002 season with their Terrapin teammates this Friday, January 25. Maryland opens the 2002 campaign February 15 in the Charleston Crab House Shootout vs. James Madison in Charleston, S.C.
