Maryland vs. Georgia Tech: Postgame Notes

Feb. 13, 2002

Recap| Final Stats| Quotes| Photo Gallery

  • Maryland's 85-65 win gives the Terrapins (No. 3 USA Today/ESPN/No. 3 AP) their best conference start in the history of the program at 10-1. The victory gives Maryland its sixth-straight 20-win season and keeps the Terps in stride with No. 1/1 Duke headed into Sunday's match-up at Cole Field House.

  • Maryland's 20-3 record matches the best mark in school history to open a season. The 1975 Terrapins began the year 20-3 en route to a 24-5 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

  • The Terps are in the running for their first ACC regular-season title since posting an 11-3 record in 1980. Maryland's only other ACC regular-season championship came in 1975 when the Terps were 10-2.

  • The victory puts Maryland on a seven-game win streak and extends the Terrapins' 2001-02 Cole Field House win streak to 12 (15 in all dating to last season), marking the longest season-opening home court victory stretch since the 1994-95 Terps went 16-0 at home.

  • The Terrapins have now won the last eight home meetings against Georgia Tech. The last time the Yellow Jackets were victorious at Cole Field House was Feb. 5, 1994.

  • The Terps' 53-34 (+19) rebounding margin was Maryland's greatest advantage on the boards in the last two seasons. Maryland outrebounded Delaware State by a previous season-high +18 on Nov. 24, and the best mark last season was +17 at Florida State (1-14-01).

  • Senior Naismith and Wooden awards finalist Lonny Baxter scored 10 of his 22 points within the contest's first 7:48 and contributed 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and 30th of his career. Baxter led the team in points on Wednesday for the sixth time this season.

  • With 14 points and 12 rebounds, athletic sophomore Chris Wilcox registered his 5th season (and career) double-double by the 15:00 mark in the second half. The last time two Terps contributed double-double efforts was Maryland's 84-63 win against Florida State (Jan. 26, 2002).

  • With the Terps' victory, senior Naismith and Wooden awards finalist Juan Dixon tied former teammate Terence Morris as the second-winningest player in Maryland basketball history with 98. One more Terp win will tie Dixon with former teammate Mike Mardesich for the Maryland all-time record (99).

  • One of the most complete players in the nation, Juan Dixon needs only 25 points to become the first player in NCAA history with 2,000 points, 300 steals and 200 made 3-pointers. He currently totals 1,975 points, 313 steals and 204 3-pointers headed into Sunday's match-up with the Blue Devils.

  • Juan Dixon extended his streak of double-figure scoring games to 41, but saw his 3-point scoring streak come to an end at 13 games.

  • Junior point guard Steve Blake finished the game with five points and eight assists. Blake now needs only 13 assists to become Maryland's all-time leader. He currently trails only Keith Gatlin, who handed out 649 helpers from 1984-86/88, headed into Sunday's game.

  • Senior swingman Byron Mouton netted 10 points in the second half to finish with 14. It marked his fifth consecutive game of double-figure scoring, and 12th in the last 16 games.
