
Terps Drop Season Opener To James Madison, 10-3

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Senior leftfielder Jason Cushman went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead James Madison past Maryland, 10-3, in game number one of the Charleston Crab House Shootout in Charleston, S.C. Friday afternoon.
The Terrapins (0-1) opened the scoring in the top of the second as shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) led off with a single and stole second. He then scored on a RBI double by designated hitter Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) to put the Terps ahead, 1-0.
James Madison (1-0) answered back in the bottom of the second as catcher Dustin Bowman doubled to lead off the frame and scored on a sacrifice fly by rightfielder Alan Lindsey. The Dukes tacked on an additional three runs in the bottom of the third.The inning was highlighted by shortstop Nathan Doyle's RBI triple that scored centerfielder KurtIsenburg. JMU added two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Terrapins mounted a slight comeback in the top of the sixth as freshman leftfielder Will Frazier (Michellville, Md.) blasted his first home run of the season over the left centerfield fence. Maryland also scored one run in the eighth as freshman centerfielder Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) drove in his first run of the year for the Terps' third run.
The Dukes proved to be too much for the Terrapins as they scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.The frame was highlighted by Brent Metheny's double that scored both Doyle and Isenburg. Cushman singled home Metheny on the next at-bat. James Madison added another in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final score of 10-3.
Junior lefthander Dan Meyer (1-0) picked up the victory for the Dukes as he pitched five innings and allowed only one earned run.Junior righthander Rick McKernan picked up his first save of the season as he tossed the last four innings of the game and struck out three.
The Terps return to action on Saturday as they face The Citadel at 5pm.James Madison plays Richmond at 2:05 today.
