Mt. PLEASANT, S.C.- Junior pitcher Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) pitched six innings and allowed just three runs on four hits to lead Maryland to a 10-3 victory over Marshall Sunday afternoon at the Charleston Cup Challenge. Ainsworth fanned four to lead the Terps to their second straight win. In those last two contests, the Terps outscored their opponents 23-5.
The Terps jumped on top of the Thundering Herd early by scoring six runs over the first two innings including five first inning runs.
The six-run cushion would be more than enough for Ainsworth and the Terrapin pitching staff. After Marshall scored three times in the fifth off Ainsworth, the Pennsylvania native pitched a scoreless sixth and gave way to another strong effort by the Terrapin bullpen.
Freshman Chris Clem (Conestoga, Pa.) and senior Ken Beck (Laurel, Md.) combined to shutout the Herd over the final three innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts to preserve the victory. In the Terps' last two games, the bullpen has combined to allow just one unearned run on one hit with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) finished an excellent weekend of play by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Terps offensively on Sunday. Over the three-day tournament in Charleston, McCurdy went 10-for-16 with six runs, six RBIs, two doubles and two triples.
Sophomore Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) also had a strong game by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as Maryland totaled 10 hits on the day. In their last two games, the Terps have exploded offensively with 23 runs scored and 27 hits.
The victory improved Maryland to 4-2 on the year while Marshall falls to 2-6. The Terrapins are back in action Friday, March 1 vs. Pace in the 2002 home opener for the Terps. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Shipley Field.
