COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Freshman catcher Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) drilled his ninth home run of the season and knocked in three runs to lead Maryland to a 4-2 victory over Coppin State Wednesday afternoon at Shipley Field. The victory improved the Terrapins to 26-17 overall and raised their home record to an impressive 19-5.
The game lasted just two hours and 12 minutes as both teams pitched well and played excellent defense.
Coppin State broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when shortstop Kevin Solano blasted a solo home run to left field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Terps got back into things quickly, also via the long ball, as Maxey crushed a home run to right field on a 1-1 count to give the Terps the lead at 2-1. Freshman left fielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) got things started with a one-out single before Maxey put the Terps on the board.
Maxey drove in his third run of the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to score sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) and put the Terps ahead 3-1.
Frazier added the Terrapins' second sacrifice fly of the game in the eighth to score junior right fielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) to make the score 4-1 Maryland.
The Eagles scored one unearned run off Maryland closer Ken Beck (Laurel, Md.) to round out the scoring at 4-2. Beck earned his fifth save of the season for the Terps after closing out the contest in the ninth and also moved into the record book at Maryland. Beck is now tied for fourth-place on the single-season save list with five saves. Beck needs just two more saves to tie the single-season save record of seven at Maryland, held by Brian Dunn (1994) and Dale Lohr (1993).
Freshman reliever Chris Davis (Ellicott City, Md.) earned his first collegiate victory after pitching one inning for the win. Coppin State starter Stan Alston was the tough-luck loser, allowing just three earned runs over eight innings for his second complete game of the season.
The Terrapins will look to extend their winning streak to three Friday night when Duke visits to open a three-game series at Shipley Field. Friday's contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
