* The Maryland basketball team (No. 25 USA Today/ESPN, receiving votes AP) upended a scrappy Wisconsin squad (No. 13 USA Today/ESPN, No. 15 AP) 73-67 in an overtime see-saw thriller Tuesday night, extending their season-opening win streak to four. It was Maryland's first overtime game in the Comcast Center and the team's first overtime game since a loss to Virginia on March 9, 2003.
* With tonight's win, Maryland narrows the series margin vs. Wisconsin to 2-3, with their other win coming in the second round of the Terrapins' 2002 NCAA Tournament Championship run.
* At 3-2, Maryland also moves above .500 in the five-year history of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. Three of the last four ACC/Big Ten Challenge games that Maryland has participated in have gone to overtime (Wisconsin in 2000 and Indiana in 2002).
* The Terrapins, now 4-0 to start the season for only the fourth time in the Gary Williams era, have now been victorious in seven straight games at Comcast Center, including wins over Clemson, North Carolina and Wake Forest last year.
* Four Terrapins set new career highs in Tuesday's contest. Jamar Smith's 25 points shattered his previous mark of 19 points, set against George Mason on Nov. 25, 2003. Chris McCray's 15-point effort broke his previous record of 12, set vs. Hofstra on Nov. 29, 2003, while John Gilchrist had nine assists to set a new career mark in that category. Nik Caner-Medley had a career-high four blocks in the win, doubling his previous total set on four separate occasions last season.
* Smith continues to emerge as an intimidating low-post threat, as he racked up his fourth consecutive double-double in the young season (in four games) and fourth of his Terrapin career with a 25-point, 11-rebound performance against a tough Badger defense. Smith has led the Terps in rebounding in all four contests of the 2003-04 season. Six of Smith's 25 points came in overtime.
* Smith already notched an 11-point, 10-rebound performance vs. Hofstra (Nov. 29), a 19-point, 13 rebound performance against George Mason (Nov. 25) and a 14-point, 12-rebound effort vs. American (Nov. 22). The last time a Terrapin posted four double-doubles in consecutives games was during Maryland's 2002 national championship season, when then-senior Lonny Baxter posted four in a row, vs. North Carolina (16 pts, 10 rebs on Feb. 10), Georgia Tech (22 pts, 10 rebs on Feb. 13), Duke (11 pts, 10 rebs on Feb. 17) and Clemson (10 pts, 12 rebs on Feb. 20).
* With 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, McCray reached double-digit scoring for the third time in four games this season.
* In addition to his career-high assist total, Gilchrist chipped in 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while collecting seven boards.
* The Terps jumped out to a 12-5 lead on the strength of four points apiece from McCray and Ekene Ibekwe, both of whom converted breakaway lay-ins, caused by two Ibekwe steals. Wisconsin countered with a 9-0 run over a six-minute stretch to take a 14-12 lead at the 9:35 mark of the first half, before Caner-Medley's leaner and Gilchrist's floater put the Terps back on top 16-14 with 8:20 left in the half.
* Smith had a personal 6-0 run, capped by a long bank shot, in less than 1:30 to put Maryland up 22-17 at the under-four-minute media timeout. The Terps ended the first half on a 14-5 run en route to a 30-22 halftime lead, which included a five-plus-minute Badger scoring drought.
* Maryland's strong interior play resulted in a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint (18-6 in the first half) and a 17-8 edge in second-chance points (10-0 in the first half). As a team, the Terps also swatted away 10 Badger shots, with Caner-Medley's four blocks leading the way.
* The Terps countered Wisconsin's trademark defense by holding the Badgers to a paltry 6-of-20 shooting in the first half, while the Terps shot 15-of-31 in the opening half, assisted by nine Badger turnovers (eight of which were Terrapin steals).
