
Terp Men Finish Fourth At ACC Quad Meet

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team won this weekend's ACC quad meet in Atlanta, defeating host Georgia Tech 265-86, Florida State 228-124 and Virginia Tech 240-113. The men fell to all three teams by scores of 214-139 to the Yellow Jackets, 240-113 to the Seminoles and 205-146 to the Hokies. The women remain perfect at 5-0 with their first three ACC victories of the season. The men fall to 2-3 and 0-3 in the conference.
Senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) led the way for the women, picking up her second and third individual victories of the weekend. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.42 and the 500-free in 4:54.51 Saturday afternoon after taking the 200-free Friday evening.
Senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) set a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center record in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA `B' cut time of 2:01.69. It was Knepper's second victory of the weekend after winning the 100-back Friday.
Other winners for the Terps included senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) in the 400-IM (4:25.92) and senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan), who tied for first in the 100-fly (56.00).
Sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) finished second in the 400-IM (4:28.11), junior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) was runner-up in the 200-breast (2:20.47) and freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) came in second in the 500-free (4:54.64).
Freshman diver Nicole Rose (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) placed third on the 1-meter board (238.40), freshman Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) finished third in the 400-IM (4:28.78), junior Inbal Levavi (Kibbutz Givat Haim, Israel) took third in the 200-back (2:05.70) and junior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) came in third in the 100-fly (57.53).
The Terps also swept the relays, with the 200-medley relay team of Knepper, Kovacs, sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) winning in a time of 1:44.23 and the 400-free relay team of Miller, Mulyayeva, Weir and Sackett winning in 3:27.40.
Senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) was the only winner for the Terps on the men's side. Weinberg won the 200-back in 1:49.21, and senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was runner-up, swimming a time of 1:50.67.
Freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) took second in the 100-fly (51.32) and third in the 400-IM (4:01.15).
The Terps have two weeks off before returning to the pool for the Terrapin Cup Invitational Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 18-20, at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park.
