
Terp Swimmers Finish Fourth At ACC's

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team finished in fourth place at the ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship with 506 team points. Host Virginia won its second consecutive conference title with 675 points. North Carolina was second (523.5) and Florida State placed third (611). Clemson rounded out the top five (294.5).
Junior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) had the Terps' highest individual finish of the night, taking third place in the 1,650-yard freestyle with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 16:25.21. Freshman Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) finished eighth in the event (16:41.29).
Juniors Chrissy Miller (South Seaside Park, N.J.) and Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) and freshman Martha Whistler (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with respective times of 51.55, 51.69 and 51.73.
Junior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.54, and sophomore Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.06).
The Terps' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Knepper, Miller, Weir and junior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) took third with a season-best time of 3:24.15, a 'B' cut mark.
Senior Valerie Courtois (Saveuse, France) and freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) placed ninth and 16th, respectively, in the 100-free, while freshman Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) finished 14th in the 200-breast. Sophomore Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and freshman Gigi deToll placed 17th and 19th, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly, and junior Caitlin Gannon (Evans City, Pa.) took 21st in the 200-back.
Mulyayeva, Lavell, Malanina, deToll, Knepper and senior Jenny Brian (Cockeysville, Md.) earned All-ACC honors with their top-three finishes at the meet. Florida State's Emma Dutton was named 2004 Most Valuable Swimmer with three individual wins and four relay victories. The Seminoles' Tiffany Manning was named Most Valuable Diver after sweeping the one- and three-meter boards.
