The Maryland women's and men's swimming and diving teams return to the pool Friday to take on local rivals Johns Hopkins and Howard. Competition begins at the Campus Recreation Center at 3 p.m.
The women (1-2, 1-2 ACC) jump back into the pool after defeating Georgia Tech 180-17), but falling to #21 Florida State 230-121 and #22 Virginia Tech 210.5-140.5 at the ACC quad meet last weekend.
The men (0-3, 0-3 ACC) are hungry for their first win of the season. Last weekend, the Terp men fell to all three ACC rivals by scores of 237.5-115.5 to the Yellow Jackets, 243-105 to the Seminoles and 222-131 to the Hokies.
Last Year vs. the Blue Jays and Bison
The Terp men and women both dominated Johns Hopkins and Howard last year. The women defeated the Blue Jays, 174-51, and the Bison, 197-30, while the men notched their first two victories of last season with a 156.5-73 win over Hopkins and a 197-30 win over Howard.
Then-freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) notched the first win of his career, taking victory in the 200-IM (1:53.04) and finishing second in the 500-free (4:44.70). Then-freshman Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) also swept both diving events followed by then-freshman Jason Eccleston (Reisterstown, Md.) .
Then-sophomore Gigi deToll won the 100-fly (56.70) and then-freshman Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-Zion, Israel) won the 200-free. Then-freshman Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) took second in the 1,000-free (10:20.72).
Then-freshman Nicole Rose (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) swept the diving events with scores of 253.12 on the one-meter board and 275.10 on the three-meter for the first two victories of her career.
Women at a Glance
The women won the program's first-ever ACC Championship and finished with a perfect 11-0 overall record, including 7-0 in the ACC. They finished last season ranked 12th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of American polls, the highest ranking in program history.
Maryland sent nine women to the NCAA Championships and finished 22nd with 40 points.
Junior Gigi deToll swam to her second ACC title in the 100-fly qualifying for the NCAA Championships. She earned Honorable All-American honors in the 100-fly and 200-medley relay and All-ACC honors in the 100-fly, 200-medley and 400-medley relays.
Junior Sasha Malanina qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-IM, 500-free, 1,000-free and 800-free relay.
Freshman Yelena Skalinskaya swam in the 2004 Olympic Games in the 50- and 100-free.
Men at a Glance
The men finished 4-7 last season, including 1-6 in the ACC, and finished seventh at the conference championship meet.
The Terps have four seniors returning: Pat Doyle, Andrew Foran, Erik Putkonen and Chris Starr.
Sophomore Martin Ott earned All-ACC honors for his third-place finish in the 200-IM at the ACC Championships.
Sophomore Stefan Giesen was a finalist in the 200-free and 200-fly at the ACC Championships.
About Coach Durden
Head coach Dave Durden has spent the last five seasons at Auburn University, including the last season as the assistant men's head coach for the 2005 NCAA National Championship Team.
Durden graduated from California-Irvine in 1998 with a degree in electrical engineering.
