Maryland Swimming Hosts Terrapin Cup Invitational

The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to the pool Thursday for the three-day Terrapin Cup Invitational. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. each day with finals at 6 p.m.

Nine schools will compete this year: Connecticut, Maryland, Mary Washington, NC State, Richmond (women only), Towson, West Chester, West Virginia, and William & Mary.

The Terp women cruised to victory last year with 1,341 points over runner-up Richmond (698.5). The men's team scored a win with 1,161.5, 144 points more than runner-up Connecticut (1017.5).

Last Time for the Terps

· The women defeated Duke (134-109) and Miami (139-96) bringing them to a 5-2, 3-2 ACC record.

· The Terp men fell to Duke (126-115) bringing them to 2-4, 0-4 ACC record.

· Freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the only double-winner for the women picking up wins in the 50-free (23.89) and the 100-free (51.86).

· Other individual winners for the Terps included junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) in the 1000-free (10:10.85), sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) in the 200-free (1:52.74), and junior Erica Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.) in the 200-fly (2:06.44). Senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) remained undefeated in the 200-breast winning in a time of 2:17.64.

· The Terps also swept the relays, with the 400-medley relay team of Levavi, Kovacs, Sumrall and Skalinskaya winning in 3:51.52, and the 400-free relay team of Finkler, Laputka, Sumrall and Suguiyama winning in 3:32.10.

· On the men's side, three Terps picked up two wins: junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.), and sophomores Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany) and Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany).

· Ott won the 200-IM (1:53.08) and the 200-back (1:52.94), Geisen won the 200-free (1:43.18) and the 200-fly (1:55.43), and Gray won the 50-free (20.97) and the 100-free (46.57).

Last Year at Terp Cup

· The women dominated the three-day Terrapin Cup Invitational, taking first place in 15 of 20 events.

· Then-senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) broke her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.48, an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. She also recorded `B' cuts in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle. Mulyayeva won the 100-breast and placed second in the 100-fly and the 100-free.

· The 200-medley relay team of then-senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), Mulyayeva, then-sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and then-senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) set a new school mark with a `B' cut time of 1:41.40.

· The 400-medley relay team of Knepper, Mulyayeva, deToll and then-senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) won the event with an automatic qualifying time.

· Miller recorded `B' cuts in the 200- and 500-free, placing second in both events.

· Then-senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) won the 400-IM with a `B' cut time. Then-sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) also recorded a `B' cut in the event, finishing third. Lavell also swam a `B' cut in the 1,650-free, finishing second.

· Knepper won the 100-back with a `B' cut time. She also swam a `B' cut in the 200-back, placing second. Weir recorded a `B' cut in the 100-free, tying with Mulyayeva for second place.

· Then-freshman Nicole Rose (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) swept the diving events.

· The Terp women also recorded `B' cut times in the 200-free relay, the 200-free relay and the 800-free relay, sweeping the events.

· On the men's side, then-freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) broke the school record in the 400-IM, winning the event in a `B' cut time of 3:53.90. Ott also won the 200-IM and the 200-fly.

· Then-senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) swam his first `B' cut of the season in the 200-back, winning the event. He also won the 500-free and placed second in the 100-back to then-senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.), who also came in second to Brandenberger in the 200-back.

· Then- sophomore Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) won the first event of his career, taking the 200-breast. Then-freshman diver Jason Eccleston (Reisterstown, Md.) also recorded the first victory of his career, taking the 3-meter board.

· The Terp men also won the 200-medley relay, the 800-free relay, the 200-free relay, the 400-medley relay

· Thursday and Friday Prelims: parking available in a cash lot in the Stadium Parking Garage.

· Friday Finals: Due to a men's basketball game Friday at 8 p.m. vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, a cash lot is available in lot 6. Free parking will be available in lot 3 and lot 1. Basketball Game Map
