Terp Swimmers Capture Two ACC Relay Titles

ATLANTA - The No. 12 Maryland women's swimming and diving team won swept relays and broke several records on the first day of the ACC Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, capturing conference titles in both events. The Terps are in the lead with 80 points, followed by No. 13 Virginia (68) and No. 16 North Carolina (64).

The Terps' 800-yard freestyle relay team of seniors Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) and Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.), freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) and sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) set a new conference mark in the victory. The quartet's time of 7:13.29 is also a school, pool and meet record, as well as an NCAA `B' cut. The Terps finished for than 4.5 seconds ahead of second-place Virginia.

Lavell achieved a `B' cut in the 200-free with her leadoff split of 1:48.37 in the relay. The time is her career best and the Terps' fastest this season.

In the second and final event of the evening, the Terrapins' 200-yard medley relay of senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan), sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) won with a `B' cut time of 1:40.98. The time breaks Maryland school and Georgia Tech Aquatic Center records.

The ACC Championships resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. Follow the meet with Livestats.
