
Lavell Breaks 400-IM Record On Day Two At NCAA's

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 12 Maryland women's swimming and diving team is in 18th place with 38 team points after the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships. Georgia maintains its lead with 328.5 points, followed by Auburn (297) and Arizona (256).
Senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) finished eighth in the 400-yard individual medley with her time of 4:18.82. She broke her own school record in the event in the morning preliminaries, clocking in at 4:13.89. The 400-IM is the second Maryland record Lavell has broken in two days, as she reset the 500-yard freestyle mark Thursday.
Sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) each placed 15th in their respective events. Knepper posted a time of 55.20 in the 100-yard backstroke, while deToll clocked in at 54.89 in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Terps' 200-medley relay team of Knepper, senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan), deToll and senior Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) finished 10th (1:41.52), while the 800-free relay team of Lavell, Knepper, senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) and sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) placed 12th (7:17.05).
At the morning preliminaries, Malanina came in 33rd in the 400-IM (4:22.11), Mulyayeva placed 34th in the 100-fly (55.21) and 35th in the 100-breast (1:03.91), Miller finished 43rd in the 200-free (1:50.02), freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) came in 58th in the 200-free (1:54.72) and junior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) placed 27th in the 100-breast (1:03.32).
