The University of Maryland men's basketball team (18-12) will take on the Texas Christian Horned Frogs (21-13) in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) quarterfinal round on Saturday, March 26, in College Park at noon. Those unable to make it to Comcast Center will be able to watch the national broadcast on ESPN2.
The Terps advanced to the quarterfinals with a 78-63 second round win over Davidson in College Park on Wednesday evening. Before a 2005 NIT best 12,126 fans at Comcast Center, rookie James Gist sparked a 16-0 run in the first half and led six Terrapin double-figure scorers with 15 points, to which he added seven rebounds. Junior Nik Caner-Medley posted his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards, and big man Travis Garrison added 12 as well. Junior transfer Sterling Ledbetter ran the point with proficiency in his second career start, scoring 10 and adding eight assists, while Ekene Ibekwe and Chris McCray each contributed 11 points and nine and six rebounds, respectively. Ibekwe also rejected five Wildcat shots.
Texas Christian won two road games in the first two rounds of the NIT - a 60-58 decision at Miami (Ohio) on March 16 and a 78-76 overtime victory at Western Michigan on Monday. TCU's impressive list of wins for the season include NCAA Sweet Sixteen participant Texas Tech (Nov. 23, 83-68), Florida State (Nov. 28, 71-70) and Memphis (Jan. 15, 61-59).
The winner of Saturday's quarterfinal matchup will advance to Tuesday's semifinal round at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
