Massenburg Becomes Third Terp In History To Win NBA Championship Ring

June 24, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland standout and 1989 All-ACC selection Tony Massenburg became the third Terrapin in history to capture the NBA crown when the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons for the 2005 title.

Massenburg, a 13-year NBA veteran, joined former Terrapin stars Adrian Branch (Los Angeles Lakers, 1987) and current assistant coach Keith Booth (1998, Chicago Bulls) as Maryland players who have been a part of NBA championship teams.

Massenburg began his professional career as a 1990 second round draft choice of San Antonio, and played for a NBA record-tying 12 different teams before returning to the Spurs prior to the 2004-05 season. He owns NBA career averages of 6.2 points and 4.3 rebounds across a 15-year career split by several seasons overseas.

His Terrapin campaign spanned an era of three different head coaches, from Lefty Driesell to Bob Wade to current head man Gary Williams. Massenburg paced the Terps in scoring (16.6 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and field goal percentage (.550) as a junior in 1989-90 and is still listed among Maryland's all-time leaders in career points (19th, 1,354) and rebounds (12th, 722).
