College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team has named Jim Farr as its pitching coach, head coach Terry Rupp announced today.
Farr, a former major league pitcher, comes to the Terrapins from the College of William & Mary, where he leaves as the school's all-time winningest coach after transforming the Tribe into a perennial Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contender. In 13 seasons at William & Mary, Farr compiled a record of 373-310-2, including five consecutive 30-win campaigns from 2000-2004, the program's first conference title in 2001 and a school-record 37 victories in 2004.
"He'll be a great addition to the coaching staff," Rupp said. "His pitching experience is outstanding and his presence will give us a chance to achieve our goals, which include making the NCAA Tournament."
Farr takes over a pitching staff which returns eight letterwinners from 2005.
"I'm very excited to join Coach Rupp's staff and the University of Maryland baseball program," Farr said. "I look forward to competing against some of the top baseball programs in the country in the Atlantic Coast Conference."
Farr's tenure at William & Mary was marked not only by victories, but by his invaluable contributions to the program as well. In 1999 he helped spearhead an effort to build Plumeri Park, a brand new 1,000-seat baseball facility on campus. Over the years Farr has helped numerous student-athletes reach the next level, sending 26 players to the pros, including four who have major league experience.
In 1993 he was named CAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his club to a 24-19-1 record in his first season at the school.
A graduate of Penn State University, Farr was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1978. He went on to pitch in the Rangers' and San Francisco Giants' organizations for the next eight years. An elbow injury would eventually force him to retire, but not before reaching the Major League level, where he served two tours of duty. His best big league season was 1982 when he compiled a 2.50 ERA as a reliever.
