After the first night of competition in a three-team meet at the University of Pittsburgh, the Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams each hold leads over Villanova. The men have a dominating 125-32 lead while the women hold an 88-78 advantage. Both teams trail host-team Pittsburgh. The women are on the short end of a 94-73 score, while the men trail 131-35.

The women recorded three first place finishes in the pool and one on the boards. The 200-medley relay team of senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), junior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), and freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) finished in 1:44:35.

On the boards, Nicole Rose (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 1-meter board with a score of 234.05.

The men recorded their only first place finish of the day when senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) took the 100-free with a time of 46:14.

Gray was also part of two high-placing relay teams, as the 200-medley relay team of sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.), freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany), and Gray took third with 1:36:04. Gray led off the 200-free relay team, which also included freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), freshman John Closs (New Providence, N.J.), and anchor Thomasson. The team took second, finishing in 1:25:69.

Geisen also finished third in the 100-butterfly (52:11).

The teams are back in action tomorrow morning at 11:00 as they conclude the 2-day meet in Pittsburgh.
