The Maryland Terrapins men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned victories over Villanova in a 2-day tri-meet held at the University of Pittsburgh. The men posted a dominating 268-68 win, while the women held off the Wildcats to the tune of 187-161. Both teams came up short against Pittsburgh, though. The men lost 247-77 while the women fell 209-141.
The women's 400 meter relay team gave them their first victory of the day. The team, comprised of senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), junior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), and freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan), won with a time of 3:50:63. Later in the day, the 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel), Skalinskaya, Sumrall, and junior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) took second place (3:32:38).
Several other women posted strong scores that helped put the Terps in the win column against Villanova. Junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) recorded a second place time of 5:01:91 in the 500 free. Sophomore Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) came in third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30:06, and sophomore Kat Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) turned in a fourth place performance in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:14:40.
On the boards, sophomore Nicole Rose (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) completed a sweep of the women's diving events over the weekend when she won the 3-meter board with a score of 242.65. On Friday, she won the 1-meter board at 234.05.
The men recorded their only first place finish of the day when junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) took the 200 breast with a time of 2:11:77.
Junior Rob Cabrera (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had a strong day. He finished second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:54:61. Later, in the 200 backstroke, he earned a third place finish with a time of 2:07:11.
The relay teams also turned in noteworthy performances on the men's side. The 400 medley relay team took second place. Comprised of sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.), junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.), freshman Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany), and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.), they finished in 3:30:64. Later, the 400 free relay team of Geisen, Gray, freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and freshman John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) also took second (3:08:83).
The Terps had a strong presence at the top of two events. Senior Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) and junior Andrew Doeck (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished second and third in the 200 free with times of 1:47:81 and 1:50:72, respectively. In addition, Shepard and freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) took third and fourth in the 200 IM with times of 2:00:49 and 2:01:46, respectively.
Freshman Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) also had a solid performance in the 200 butterfly, taking third place with a 2:05:24.
The Terps return to the pool next Saturday against ACC foe N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C.
