
Men Drop Road Meet against N.C. State

The Maryland women's swimming and diving team defeated the N.C. State Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C. today by a score of 127-114. The men were unable to match their counterparts, falling to the Wolfpack 152-76.
The women sealed their victory in the final event when their 200 freestyle relay team held off N.C. State's, finishing in 1:35:73 to the Wolfpack's 1:36:15. The team is comprised of freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan), junior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.), senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), and junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia).
The women also scored a relay victory with the 200 medley team of Sumrall, senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), junior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), and sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel). They finished in 1:45:84 to take the event.
DeToll and Sumrall paced the 100 butterfly as they took the top two spots with times of 56:83 and 57:76, respectively. Skalinskaya earned two more victories, in the 50 free (23:76) and 100 free (51:72).
The women earned three other 1st-place finishes on their way to the victory. Finkler took the 200 free with a time of 1:53:64. Malanina won the 200 IM in 2:05:27, and Kovacs took the 100 breaststroke in 1:03:40.
Several other women turned in noteworthy performances. In the 1000 free, sophomore Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) took second place with a time of 10:18:96 while sophomore Julie O'Brian finished third in 10:36:05. The Terps also finished second and third in the 100 backstroke, where senior Inbal Levavi and Jones finished in 59:08 and 1:00:46, respectively.
The men earned two victories on the day. The team dominated the 100 breast event as junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) won with a time of 58:74. He was followed closely by teammates Eric Cullen (freshman, Severn, Md.) and Tony Miller (junior, Severna Park, Md.), who took second and third with times of 58:85 and 1:00:20.
The 200 free relay team also scored a victory in the final event of the day when they recorded a time of 1:24:21. The team consists of senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.), senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.), sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany), and freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.).
Doyle finished strong in the 200 free, taking second place with a time of 1:43:19. The Terps took three of the top five spots in the 200 IM as Geisen, Miller, and Cullen finished 3rd (1:56:74), 4th (1:56:85), and 5th (1:59:22), respectively. Geisen also earned a second place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:45:65.
Sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) had two strong showings as he placed third in the 100 fly (52:04) and second in the 100 back (53:91). Thomasson was followed by senior Erik Putkonen, who finished third in the 100 back with a time of 54:62. Finally, the Terps put up a strong showing in the 100 free as Gray took second in 46:34 and Golebiewski fourth in 47:54.
The Terps return to College Park next weekend where they will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday at the Campus Recreation Center.
