
Maryland Volleyball Falls In Five To Wake Forest

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps were 4-0 this season in five-game matches going into the weekend, but suffered a tough loss tonight to Wake Forest in Reynolds Gym. Maryland falls to 8-10 (1-8 ACC), while the Demon Deacons improve to 10-7 (6-2 ACC) in Winston-Salem. Game scores were (30-25, 29-31, 30-26, 19-30, 10-15).
It was the thirteenth match that Maryland outblocked its opponent, as the Terps swatted 17 to the Deacs' 12. Both teams notched 59 digs in the match, yet Maryland was held to a .126 hitting percentage and 54 kills.
"We showed a lot of character tonight," said head coach Janice Kruger. "Our offense was better and we played hard together. We've got something to build on and we'll get back to the gym and continue to practice hard."
Jade Brown recorded 14 kills and five digs, while redshirt freshman Kathleen Wilson collected 10 kills with eight blocks.
Freshman Katie Usher notched nine blocks on the night. Three Terrapins posted double-digit digs, with Beth Gillming collecting 16 and Maggie Schmelzle and Tina Aramburu tallying 13 and 12, respectively.
Wake Forest (.183) registered four players in double-digit kills with Jackie Lucas leading all scorers with 18 kills.
The two teams traded points early in the first game when, at 12-12, Maryland pulled ahead on an ace by Aramburu, a kill by Katie Usher and a Demon Deacon error. The Terrapins kept the lead, holding at least a three-point lead through the remainder of the game, before closing out the game on a kill by Aramburu for 30-25.
The Terps had an early 11-5 lead in the second game with kills by Jade Brown, Wilson and Gillming. Wake Forest bounced back for a 14-14 tie, when Maryland built a three-point lead at 24-21 and at 29-26, but lost the game on Terp errors and two kills by Natalie Mullikin. Mullikin finished the match with 13 kills and nine blocks.
The third game was a hard-hitting contest as Maryland held leads at 10-7 and 22-19. Wake Forest tied the game at 22-22, but Maryland would sustain its lead for the 30-26 win and a 2-1 lead. Wake Forest came out strong in the fourth game with a 7-1 start, and extended its lead to 16-9 and 27-15. The Deacs won the game 19-30 on a kill by Lauren Peterson to force a deciding contest.
Jade Brown opened the fifth game with a cross-court kill, as the Terps stayed even with Wake Forest at the start of the game. Wilson downed a kill to tie the game at 6-6, when Wake Forest scored three straight points on a kill by Peterson, an ace from Jenna Doane and a Terp error. The margin held at 12-9, when the Demon Deacons prevailed for the 10-15 win.
