Maryland rallied from a 0-2 game deficit to beat NC State tonight, 3-2 (24-30, 30-32, 30-28, 30-15, 15-11) in Reynolds Coliseum. The Terps registered a season-high 83 digs with 19 blocks as they gained their second ACC victory of the season to stand 2-9 in the conference while NC State (2-19, 0-11 ACC) remains winless in the league.
Four Terrapins notched double-figures in kills, and three Terps had at least 13 digs in the match. Maryland (9-11, 2-9 ACC) had a .162 hitting percentage.
Beth Gillming recorded her season-high of 27 digs adding 12 kills on the night. Jade Brown led all players with 19 kills, while Mary Beth Brown and Katie Usher each added ten. Usher posted the match-high of nine blocks, as Jade Brown and Tina Aramburu each swatted seven, while freshman Ashley Hogan and Mary Beth Brown combined for 11 blocks.
Senior setter Teryn Papp recorded 30 assists, while Tedi Doucet 22 in the match.
The Terps lost a 6-1 lead in the first game, as the Wolfpack tied the game at 13-13. NC State moved ahead 20-22 and built on its lead for the 24-30 win. The second game was similar, as Maryland opened with a 10-4 lead, posted a slim two-point margin at 20-18, then a tie score at 22-22. Maryland held the edge and had game point at 29-26, but the Wolfpack persevered in a late game surge for the 30-32 win. Aiwane Iboya had three kills in the last six points.
Iboya finished the night with 8 kills, while Jessica Williams collected the team-high for the Wolfpack of 18 kills and 13 digs. Andrea Bentley added 20 digs for NC State.
The Terrapin rally started in the third game as Maryland opened the game 7-1 on key blocking by Mary Beth Brown and Usher. The Terps held leads at 14-12 and 23-22, when Jade Brown's kill set up game point at 29-28. A NC State error gave Maryland the game win, 30-28.
After Iboya scored the first point for the Wolfpack in the fourth game for 0-1, the Terps charged ahead to 15-3 with kills coming from Gillming and Hogan. Maryland never relinquished the lead and extended the margin to 24-10. The Terps would go on to win 30-15, posting a .211 hitting percentage in the game.
The Terps jumped to a 5-2 lead in the deciding game, as the Wolfpack stayed close, blocking a Gillming attack at 9-7. Maryland held the lead at 11-9 when Teryn Papp set Jade Brown for a kill to give the Terps the win at 15-11.
The Terrapins return home to College Park next weekend for a 7 p.m. contest against Miami (Oct. 27) and Florida State (Oct. 29) at 1 p.m.
