
Terps Travel to Take On Duke and NC State

Coming off of a 102-90 win against Johns Hopkins in their season opener at home, the Maryland women's swimming and diving team will travel to Durham, N.C. for their first meet on the road this season. The Terps will battle ACC rivals, Duke and NC State on Saturday, November 4 starting at 2:00 pm.
The Blue Devils are currently 2-0; Duke defeated both UNC Wilmington (164-117) and Richmond (165-135) on October 21 in their season opener. NC State is currently 2-1 with wins against Gardner-Webb (125-90) and Campbell (164-51), and a loss against Richmond (154-145). For all three teams, this weekend's meet will mark the first time this season that each team will compete against an ACC opponent.
Last season against Duke:
-The Terps defeated the Blue Devils 134-109.
-Senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) and junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) were members of the first-place finishing 400-yard freestyle relay team.
-Finkler won the 200 free (1:52.74) and notched a third-place finish in the 500 free (5:07.24).
-Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) won the 100 free (51.86) followed by senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) in third (52.40) and Laputka in fifth (53.91).
-Maryland also notched first-place finishes with Skalinskaya in the 50 free (23.89), and Malanina in the 1000 free (10:10.85).
Last season against NC State:
-Finkler and senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) were members of the first-place finishing 200 medley relay team (1:45.84).
-Skalinskaya, Laputka, and Malanina were members of the 200 free relay team placing first (1:35.73).
-Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) placed second in the 500 free (10:18.96) and junior Julie O'Brien (Demascus, Md.) came in third (10:36.05).
-Maryland notched first-place finishes by Finkler in the 200 free (1:53.64), Malanina in the 200 IM (2:05.27), deToll in the 100 butterfly (56.83), and Skalinskaya in the 100 free (51.72).
Last week against Johns Hopkins:
-The Terps defeated the Blue Jays 102-90.
-Maryland claimed the top three places in the 50 free; junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) won the event (24.63) followed by senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados) in second (25.16) and freshman Cindy Gangloff (Akron, Ohio) finishing third (26.31) .
-The Terps also took the top three finishes in the 200 free with Skalinskaya in first (1:53.70), freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) in second (1:54.74) and Jones following in third (1:54.78).
-Skalinskaya also won the 100 free (51.07) and Laputka came in second (54.18).
-Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won the 1000 free in 10:11.37, followed by Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) finishing second in 10:39.08. Rossi went on to win the 200 IM (2:09.86) and junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) followed with a second-place finish in the event (2:12.91).
-Maryland had the top-three times in the 100 back with Lehner swimming a 57.12, Davidson a 58.97 and Ferdinand a 1:01.03.
-In the 100 breast, the Terps had the top-two times: Smoak (1:07.47) and Csomova (1:07.78).
-In the 100 fly, freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way (57.31), followed by senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) in second (58.10), and freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) in third (58.57).
-The Terps won the 200-yard medley relay with a team consisting of Ferdinand, Smoak, deToll, and Laputka (1:48.53).
