The defending Atlantic Coast Conference women's swimming and diving champions got off to a solid start as the host University of Maryland finished the first night of the 2006 ACC Championships tied for third in the 11-team event. They were buoyed by a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay in the night's second and final event, finishing in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:42.04.

The night began with the 800 freestyle relay, in which the Terps finished fifth. That also yielded an NCAA B-cut time, as the team finished in 7:23.92. Skalinskaya led off, followed by junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), sophomore Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), and sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel).
After the relay events, the Terps were tied with Clemson for third place with 60 points each. Virginia led in the early-going with 74 points, and Florida State is close on their heels with 72 points.
