The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the University of Virginia today in the last meet of the regular season. The women's team (7-5, 4-4) fell by a score of 124-84, while the men (3-8, 0-7) lost 134-84.

It was Senior Day as seven Terrapins swam their final regular season meet at the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center. Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.), Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.), Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel), Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.), Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.), and Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) were honored in a pre-meet ceremony.

Levavi and Kovacs, along with junior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan), got the meet off to a good start for the Terps when they won the opening event, 400 medley relay (3:46.64).

Sumrall earned the Terps' first individual victory of the afternoon when she raced to the win in the 50 free, finishing in 24.03. The Terps swept the event when junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) won the men's heat in 20.70. It was the second-best time of his career, falling short only of the 20.51 he posted last week for a victory in the event against North Carolina.

The Terps swept through the 200 breaststroke events, taking the top three spots on both the men's and women's side. Kovacs took the victory for the women, finishing in 2:14.35. She was followed by junior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) and junior Katrina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia), who finished in 2:20.02 and 2:24.94, respectively.

Freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) earned the victory in the men's heat with a time of 2:06.89. He was followed by junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) in 2:08.22 and junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) in 2:12.05.

Junior Rob Cabrera (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took home the men's 500 free with a time of 4:53.59.

In an event that the Terps hoped would give them momentum to carry them into the upcoming ACC Championships, Maryland earned victories on both sides of the 400 free relay to close the meet. On the women's side, Skalinskaya, newcomer Martha Whistler, sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel), and Sumrall swam to a 3:26.73 time for the win. The men's team, comprised of another newcomer Dong Kim, Gray, freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and Doyle took their event in 3:03.83.

On the boards, sophomore Nicole Rose (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with scores of 251.25 and 279.82, respectively.

The Terps are now finished with the 2005-2006 regular season. They will next be in the pool for the ACC Championships, which will take place at their home pool at the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. The women's championships are from Feb. 15-18, and the men's are the following week, Feb. 22-25.
