The Maryland Terrapins are set to host Villanova, Richmond and Pittsburgh in a home quad meet this Friday and Saturday. The Terps are coming off of a first-place finish (140 points) at the FIU Invitational last weekend. Maryland placed ahead of five other participating teams on the women's side including Iowa in second with 128 points and FIU in third with 34 points. The Terps dominated the relay meet, winning seven out of the eight events.
The Maryland women's team currently holds a 3-1 overall season record, defeating both NC State and Duke in conference competition. The Terps will face both Villanova (4-2) and Richmond (2-3) for the second time this season. Maryland last saw the women's teams for Villanova and Richmond at the Terrapin Cup Invitational in November. The Terps scored ahead of both teams at the Terp Cup with a third-place finish, while Villanova took fourth and Richmond finished in sixth. Maryland looks to face Pittsburgh (4-1) for the first time this year.
This weekend's competition will begin on January 12th at 5:00 pm in Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center. Friday's meet will include the 1650-yard freestyle, 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 400 individual medley, 100 free, 100 breaststroke, and 200 free relay. One meter diving will take place simultaneously to these events on Friday evening.
On January 13th, Maryland's senior class will be honored at their final home meet as Terrapins. Senior recognitions will begin at 10:45 am and events will promptly follow. Saturday's meet will include the 500 free, 400 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 200 fly, 50 free, 200 back, 200 breast and 400 free relay. Three meter diving will occur at the same time as these events on Saturday morning.
"This weekend will be our seniors' last home meet," says Maryland head coach, Dave Durden, "As proud as I am of everything they have accomplished athletically (from winning ACC titles, to All-American honors and even to qualifying for World Championship trials), I am most proud of their accomplishments outside of the pool. We graduate a senior class that collectively carries over a 3.0 GPA. Our seniors have quickly understood the meaning of being a part of this program well beyond their years as an athlete, and I look forward to their last couple of months as University of Maryland swimmers as we head into ACCs and NCAAs." The following members of Maryland's 2007 senior class will be recognized on the women's side this weekend:
