Maryland women's swimming and diving fell to North Carolina 205-83 in an away meet Saturday morning. Maryland had multiple individual wins and swept a relay event. The loss brings the women's conference record to 3-2 and the season record to 6-4. Today's dual was featured in Swimming World Magazine as the "Meet of the Week".

    The Terrapins started strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay by senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan). The relay team swam a 1:45.95 in the event.

    Skalinskaya won the 50 freestyle (23.66) and led the Terps in the 200 free, finishing in fifth place (1:55.46). Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the meet in the 100 free (51.41) and also won the 1000 free for a new season-best time in the event (10:05.75).

    Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) swam a 59.94 in the 100 backstroke for a fourth-place finish while freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 200 back (2:07.16) in third place.

    Senior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) led Maryland with a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with her season-best time of 1:07.33. Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) led Maryland in the 200 breast in third place (2:26.27). Rossi went on to finish eighth in the 400 individual medley (4:32.70).

    Maryland took the top-two places in the 100 butterfly with freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) leading the way (56.67) and Broome in second with a season-best time of 56.84. In the 200 fly, Malanina swam a 2:08.45, good for a third-place finish.

    To close out the morning, the squad of Lehner, Skalinskaya, junior Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel) and junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) finished second in the 200 free relay (1:35.45).

    Maryland will see more ACC action this coming weekend; the Terps will travel to take on conference member, Virginia on Saturday, February 3rd starting at 1:00 p.m. Maryland will return to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the 2007 ACC Championships starting February 14th.
