The University of Maryland women's swimming team competed in the Florida International University Invitational today to close out a week of training for the team in Miami, Florida. The Terrapins won the relay meet with 140 points finishing ahead of Iowa (128 points), FIU (34 points), Carnegie Mellon (22 points), American (16 points) and Baldwin-Wallace College (12 points). The Terps won seven out of the eight relay events on the women's side.
In the first event of the day, the Terps took the 400-yard medley relay with the team of freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.), senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) swimming a 3:56.21 for first place. Right behind in third place was the Maryland team of junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia), freshman Patty DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) with a time of 4:08.00.
The second event for the Invitational was the 500 freestyle relay. The Terps were victorious in this relay, with senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas Barbados), junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) and freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) claiming first with a time of 4:36.23.
Maryland went on to win the 200 butterfly relay in 1:47.00. Broome, senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), Rossi and freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) comprised this first-place relay team. Finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:55.00 was the Maryland team of DeScenza, Laputka, freshman Cindy Gangloff (Akron, Ohio) and Davidson.
In the 200 breaststroke relay, the first-place team of Csomova, Smoak, Gangloff and Malanina stopped the clock at 2:06.58.
The Terps claimed first and third place in the 400 free relay. Finkler, Smoak, Malanina and Lehner led the women's meet with a 3:33.53 while the team of Laputka, Broome, Davidson and Gangloff swam a 3:46.57 good for a third-place finish.
Maryland also dominated the 200 backstroke relay taking first and third place. With a time of 1:49.84, Ferdinand, Jones, Laputka and Davidson claimed first and the Maryland team of deToll, DeScenza, Vogel and Broome took third with a 1:51.50.
In the 400 individual medley relay the first-place finishing team was Rossi, Lehner, Vogel and Malanina (4:03.14) with the Terps' team of Csomova, Jones, Gangloff and deToll finishing fifth (4:20.36).
For the final event of the day, the Terps claimed a second-place finish in the 200 free relay with Finkler, Ferdinand, Smoak and Lehner swimming a 1:38.88.
The Terps will return to action on January 12th and 13th for senior weekend at home against Pittsburgh, Villanova and Richmond. Friday's meet will begin at 5:00 pm and Saturday's meet will begin at 11:00 am at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center. Seniors Katarina Csomova, Gigi deToll, Natalie Ferdinand, Kaleena Laputka, and Sasha Malanina will be honored on the women's side at the event.
